Downing Drive Surgery is looking for a Pharmacy Technician to join their workforce to work approx. 14 hours per week! We are looking for someone who is highly motivated, organised and has a positive can-do attitude.

Develop and manage a medicines management plan and deliver patient services as determined by practice policy and local and national guidance. Support the medicines management team, in order to maximise cost-effective prescribing and improve the quality of patient care. Under the direction of the Practices, we expect that you will be able to work independently and manage your own workload. You will need excellent communication skills to be able to liaise with patients, primary care staff, community pharmacists and other partners.

Main duties of the job:

  • The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for supporting safe, effective, and efficient medicines management within the practice. This includes completing medicines reconciliation from hospital discharges, outpatient correspondence, and new patient registrations, ensuring accurate and up-to-date medication records and appropriate long-term condition recalls.
  • The role involves managing repeat prescriptions and medication queries in line with legal and practice requirements, triaging requests via internal systems including Accurx and SCA processes, and providing medicines information to patients within scope.
  • The Pharmacy Technician supports medicines optimisation and prescribing safety, including lipid management, DOAC monitoring, requesting and reviewing blood results, and reducing prescribing errors.
  • They may deliver vaccinations under approved PGDs, maintain accurate clinical records, and contribute to medicines audits, MHRA safety alerts, governance, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with GPs, nurses, community pharmacies, and wider healthcare providers is essential, alongside active participation in relevant practice and pharmacy meetings.

Downing Drive Surgery is a well-established GP practice, based in the heart of Evington, Leicester (LE5 6LP), serving approx. 6,900 patients. We use SystmOne as our clinical system and allocate a named GP to every patient to ensure continuity of care for patients. We pride ourselves on delivering compassionate, holistic healthcare that meets the need of every individual. In addition to our clinical expertise, Downing Drive Surgery is a GP Training Practice, hosting GP Registrars, and medical students. Job responsibilities:

  • Complete medicines reconciliation from hospital discharge letters and outpatient correspondence.
  • Undertake new patient medicines reconciliation and set up Long-Term Condition (LTC) recalls as required.
  • Review and update patient medication records accurately on the clinical system.
  • Process and manage repeat prescriptions in line with practice policy and legal requirements.
  • Handle prescription-related queries from internal task lists.
  • Triage and respond to medication queries via the Accurx mailbox.
  • Review new and existing requests using SCA (Service Care/Clinical Admin) processes.
  • Support lipid management and undertake structured patient reviews within scope.
  • Support DOAC management: request bloods, review results, check doses, and monitor safety (including INR-related correspondence where applicable).
  • Assist in reducing prescribing errors and improving prescribing safety.
  • Provide medicines information and advice to patients (within professional scope).
  • Deliver vaccinations under an approved PGD as a registered Pharmacy Technician.
  • Maintain accurate records of vaccinations given.
  • Participate in MOF/ICB medication audits and medicines optimisation work.
  • Use and update the Eclipse system as required for audits and reporting.
  • Document, review, distribute, and support actioning of MHRA safety alerts.
  • Support quality improvement projects relating to medicines use and safety.
  • Conduct prescribing and medicines management audits as required.
  • Liaise with GPs, nurses, community pharmacies, hospitals, and other healthcare providers.
  • Communicate effectively with patients regarding medication changes and queries.
  • Support the multidisciplinary team with medicines-related advice and administration.
  • Attend Practice Meetings including but not limited to: Practice meetings, Pharmacy Meetings, and any other ad-hoc Meetings appropriate for role.

Person Specification:

  • Experience of working in a pharmacy or healthcare environment.
  • Experience of working with IT programs and software such as Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and the internet.
  • Experience of working in a primary care / General Practice environment.
  • Experience in long-term condition management and audit work.
  • Experience of working with GP clinical systems such as SystemOne, AccuRx, Eclipse.
  • Qualified and registered Pharmacy Technician (GPhC or relevant professional body).
  • At least 5 passes at GCSE Level, or equivalent, and/or a proven level of qualification acquired by experience in a similar role either paid or unpaid.
  • An up-to-date Basic Life Support Certificate or a willingness to undertake such training and maintain such certification.
  • Strong knowledge of medicines management and prescription processes.
  • High level literacy and numeracy skills with a passion for detail and accuracy.
  • Discretion in the handling of sensitive and confidential information.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to build professional and personal credibility to gain the support of colleagues and external organisations.
  • Excellent time management skills, capable of prioritising and managing competing demands and workloads.
  • A good level of knowledge and understanding of the primary care sector and the healthcare sector.
