Dowdales School is a proud, thriving and ambitious community. Here, we work together, as one, to ensure that everyone thrives in everything that they do. As a whole school, and as individuals, we aim high by wanting the very best for all. Everyone in Dowdales School leads by example ensuring that we treat each other as we want to be treated ourselves.

We are a community school with 880 students aged 11-16 years on roll. Situated in the historic town of Dalton in Furness, we enjoy being on the fringe of the Lake District National Park. As an Ofsted rated ‘good’ school, we believe in high expectations, excellent teaching and ambition for every young person.

The Maths Department

We follow an ambitious, newly developed scheme of work that challenges all students. Our ethos as a department is that all students can achieve in Mathematics and should be provided with adaptive teaching that enables this success. Following the philosophy of the school in Key Stage 3 we have a high ability teaching group in each band with the rest being mixed ability. In Key Stage 4 we have a high ability class and do start to stream the mixed ability grouping but do not decide on tier of entry for the exams until year 11. At GCSE the exam board we follow is AQA.

Extra curricular activities are a strength at Dowdales, and the Maths department contributes to this through educational visits, team and individual challenges and clubs.

We are proud to have:

  • Extremely high aspirations for all students at Dowdales ensuring that every young person makes excellent progress and performs to the best of their ability
  • Students with positive attitudes who enjoy coming to school
  • An enthusiastic and dedicated team of staff and governors

We would welcome applications from someone who has:

  • A good understanding of effective and engaging teaching methods
  • The ability to plan lessons and sequences of lessons with clear objectives to ensure progression for all students
  • The ability to set consistently high expectations for all students through classwork and homework
