Job Description

Are you an engaging educator with strong numeracy skills looking for a teaching role where your work genuinely changes lives?
About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated Functional Skills Maths Tutor to join a training provider in the justice sector, delivering Functional Skills Maths from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2 within a prison education setting.
You’ll teach small, focused groups of adult learners with a wide range of educational backgrounds, learning needs and abilities. Many will have had difficult experiences of education, so patience, empathy and a belief in each individual's potential will matter as much as your subject knowledge. Your job is to make maths accessible, relevant and directly useful for employment and daily life.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning and delivering interactive Functional Skills Maths sessions from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.
- Conducting initial assessments and diagnostics to establish learners' starting points, then setting up and maintaining Individual Learning Plans.
- Designing inclusive, differentiated lessons that cater to diverse abilities and additional needs.
- Preparing learners thoroughly for formal assessments and qualifications.
- Promoting numeracy across the setting and working alongside prison staff, support practitioners and employability teams.
What We’re Looking For
- A strong numeracy background and a genuine passion for making maths engaging
- Excellent classroom management and adaptive teaching methods
- Strong administrative skills for ILPs, registers and assessment logs
- Resilience to teach in a secure adult environment
Desirable (but not essential):
- A Level 5 teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent)
- Prior experience in prison education, adult learning or further education
- Knowledge of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework, or an Internal Quality Assurance qualification
If you don't yet hold the Level 3 or Level 5 qualifications, that need not stop you — full funding and support can be provided to help you work towards them on the job.
Make Maths Count for Learners Who Need It Most
If you're ready to use your numeracy skills to help adults rebuild their futures, we'd love to hear from you.
What's on Offer
- Full funding for Level 3 qualification
- Full funding for Level 5 teaching qualification
