The Opportunity

We are recruiting for a resilient Generalist Cover Tutor to join the education team on-site at HMP Thameside. In this versatile and high-impact role, you will deliver engaging sessions across a range of subjects, providing high-quality cover and delivering Functional Skills English and Maths (Entry Level 1 to Level 2). By fostering a positive, inclusive environment, you will empower learners to build key skills, boost their self-esteem, and achieve meaningful qualifications that support their long-term rehabilitation. Other roles include Business, Health and Safety and Customer Service.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Flexible Delivery: Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive lessons across various core subjects and Functional Skills (English & Maths, Entry 1 to Level 2), tailoring content to small groups of learners with varied abilities and backgrounds.
  • Embedded Core Skills: Naturally embed literacy, numeracy, digital skills, and employability into everyday learning to enhance student progression.
  • Assessment & Tracking: Assess starting points, construct Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), conduct formative and summative assessments, and track student progress accurately.
  • Learner Support: Act as a positive role model to build student confidence and resilience, identifying learning barriers and collaborating with support teams to promote student wellbeing.
  • Quality & Compliance: Maintain precise attendance registers, update ILPs, adhere strictly to security protocols, and ensure delivery aligns with awarding body and Ofsted standards.

What We Are Looking For

  • Subject Core: Strong Level 3 foundation in Maths and English.
  • Teaching Qualification: A Level 5 teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, or equivalent) is preferred. No teaching qualification? Candidates with relevant experience who are willing to work towards a Level 5 teaching qualification are fully encouraged to apply.
  • Teaching Experience: Proven experience delivering Functional Skills Maths and English (Entry 1 to Level 2) with strong classroom management and adaptive delivery skills.
  • Core Competencies: Resilience, strong administrative capability (registers, ILPs, progress tracking), and a passion for engaging learners in challenging environments.
  • Desirable Criteria: Prior experience in prison education, FE, or adult learning settings, familiarity with diagnostic tools like BKSB, knowledge of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework (EIF), or an IQA qualification.
