The Opportunity
Are you an experienced plumber or trade specialist looking to step off the tools and use your industry knowledge to build better futures? Do you want to play a key role in reducing reoffending by equipping adult learners in custody with practical trade skills, safety awareness, and recognised qualifications for the building services sector?
We are recruiting for a practical, dedicated Plumbing Tutor to join the vocational education team on-site at HMP Wayland. In this hands-on role, you will deliver plumbing qualifications up to Level 2 to small groups of prison-based learners, developing their technical competence, pipework skills, and workplace discipline to help them secure meaningful employment upon release.
What You Will Be Doing
- Vocational Instruction: Plan and deliver engaging, high-quality plumbing training up to Level 2, blending practical workshop activities with essential trade theory.
- Individual Training Plans: Ensure tailored training plans are established for every learner, offering ongoing advice, guidance, and constructive feedback throughout their qualification.
- Workplace Standards & Safety: Instill strict industry standards-including health & safety, water regulations, tool control, and workshop cleanliness-within a secure learning environment.
- Progress Tracking: Assess learner practical work, track achievements accurately, and maintain detailed course documentation in line with awarding body expectations.
- Rehabilitation Focus: Build learner confidence, work-readiness, and motivation, aligning training directly with post-release employment opportunities in plumbing and building maintenance.
What We Are Looking For
- Trade Qualifications: Essential Level 2 (or higher) vocational qualification in Plumbing or Domestic Heating.
- Vocational Expertise: Substantial hands-on industry experience as an expert in plumbing, domestic pipework, or mechanical building services.
- Training Experience: Proven experience delivering vocational or on-the-job trade training, with the ability to use varied teaching methods to engage diverse learners.
- Teaching Qualifications: A teaching or assessing qualification is desirable. No teaching qualification? No problem! Full support and funding will be provided to help you achieve the required qualifications during your probationary period.
