Overview
The Maintenance & Handy Person plays a vital role in supporting the Council by managing and maintaining allotments, community land, and Council assets. This is a practical, hands-on position that requires the ability to work independently, take pride in keeping sites safe and well-presented, and demonstrate flexibility in supporting the wide range of activities carried out by the Council.
Salary Scale: Grade 13.6
Hours: Negotiable with some weekend & evening working required
Contract: Permanent
Annual Leave: 26 days plus Bank Holidays pro rata
Pension: Local Government Pension Scheme
Key Responsibilities
- Ensuring our 4 Allotment sites are safe, secure and well-maintained as well as Town workshop depot, Pencester Pavillion, Granville Gardens, Western heights and all other land owned/leased by the Council.
- Carry out repairs & maintenance such as erecting fences, and clearing the ground.
- Read utility meters and update notices on-site.
- Identify and report issues such as vandalism, damage, or anti-social behaviour.
- Take photos during visits and provide updates to the office via a smartphone and apps (supplied).
- Act as relief driver for the mayor & other civic representatives
- Assist with Town Council events, including setup, takedown, and general support.
- Oversee contractors working on Council land and assets.
- Inspect and maintain Council premises, assets, and equipment.
- Building repairs/maintenance such as hanging pictures, fixing shelves, leaky taps
- Support the Town Council Cycle Scheme by shuffling bikes and inspecting equipment.
- Undertake additional varied duties as required to support the work of the Council.
- Cleaning & security of event vehicle & utility vehicle
