Salary: £53,671 to £86,764 per annum. Figures above are full time salaries. Will be pro-rata dependant on hours. While the hospice is not part of the NHS and so does not directly match NHS rates, we are competitive to the trust and offer the following salary scale.
Hours of work: 15-37.5 hours available, working 2 to 5 days per week. Daily hours are 7.5 hours.
On call: you will be required to participate in the medical on-call rota which will be a minimum of 1 in 6. This includes weekend and overnight on call duties. On call will be paid on a sessional basis and an hourly rate for any hours spent on the unit. Due to the on-call element, there is a requirement to live within 30 minutes travelling time of the hospice for the purpose of on-call emergencies. While on-call you should not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Main duties of the job:
- Under the guidance of the Consultant in Palliative Medicine, to work as part of the hospice's multi-disciplinary team to ensure that patients and their families receive high quality specialist palliative care (SPC) in line with the objectives of the organisation.
- To share the responsibility of providing medical expertise in SPC for patients known to the Hospice.
- To provide medical cover on a sessional basis for the patients within the Hospice.
- To be part of the medical on call rota and carry out medical duties as required including admitting patients out of hours.

Job responsibilities:
- Under the guidance and the request of the Consultant in Palliative Medicine, carry out medical duties as appropriate to the setting and speciality.
- Communicate with families and carers as needed.
- To maintain and develop high standards of care, including carrying out and participating in clinical audit and evaluating and participating in relevant research.
- Participate in the hospice clinical governance programme.
- To give telephone support and palliative care advice to GPs and other Primary Health Care Staff and hospital teams as necessary.
- To communicate appropriately with all staff, liaise with other departments and agencies and attend internal and external meetings as appropriate.
- To keep accurate records of work undertaken including making entries on SystmOne.
- To cover sickness and absence when necessary.
- To maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- To always work within the hospice's policies and procedures.
- In conjunction with the Education and Training Department, in accordance with revalidation requirements, identify own professional development needs.
- To undertake essential and further training as requested.
- To undergo annual appraisal and to ensure that the requirements for revalidation are met.
- To provide support and supervision to medical students and G.P registrars on placements.
- To attend and participate in the SPC multi-disciplinary team meetings as required.
- To undertake any other relevant duties as requested by the Consultant in Palliative Medicine and Director of Clinical Services.
Person Specification:
- Medical practitioner, full GMC registration with licence to practice.
- Certificate of professional indemnity (Indemnity Insurance).
- Postgraduate experience in medical specialities of at least 2 years.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Good knowledge of therapeutics.
- Practical skills of: venepuncture, intravenous infusion, male and female catheterisation.
- Ability to participate in on call rota.
- Ability to embody and live the hospice values: United we will be: positive, professional.
- An interest in palliative care.
- To live within 30 minutes travelling time of the hospice for the purpose of on-call emergencies.
- Experience in palliative care or related specialities such as Oncology or Care of the Elderly.
- Previous attendance on advanced communication skills training.
- Palliative Medicine qualifications such as the Diploma of Palliative Medicine.
- Evidence of additional learning undertaken within the field of Palliative Medicine.
- Driving licence and use of a car.
