A leading commercial law firm with an established and highly regarded healthcare practice is continuing to invest in and expand its specialist Clinical Negligence and Healthcare Team.

This is an exciting opportunity for ambitious and motivated legal professionals at all levels who have a genuine interest in healthcare and clinical negligence work. The successful candidate will join a highly experienced team with an excellent reputation in the market, working alongside leading healthcare lawyers on a varied and high-quality caseload.

The role offers excellent opportunities to develop your existing expertise, gain exposure to complex and high-value claims, and work with experienced solicitors, clients, medical experts and Counsel. For candidates at the appropriate level, there is also the opportunity to take a lead role in developing and growing a new sub-team based in Leeds.

The Opportunity

You will manage a varied caseload of clinical negligence claims, primarily acting on behalf of Defendants, from initial instruction through to resolution.

Candidates with experience acting for either Claimants or Defendants in clinical negligence matters will be considered. Applications will also be welcomed from lawyers with a background in catastrophic injury or high-value personal injury litigation, particularly those looking to develop their career within the healthcare and clinical negligence sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing a varied caseload of clinical negligence claims from initial instruction through to resolution.
  • Advising clients on liability, causation, quantum, risk, strategy and settlement.
  • Managing disclosure, expert evidence and case management requirements.
  • Preparing and complying with case management directions and procedural deadlines.
  • Attending and, where appropriate, conducting advocacy at Court hearings, mediations and settlement meetings.
  • Drafting client advice reports, including analysis of clinical and legal issues, reserves, strategy and recommendations.
  • Drafting chronologies, pleadings, witness statements, Court documentation and settlement agreements.
  • Instructing and liaising with medical experts and Counsel.
  • Providing appropriate support and advice to healthcare professionals throughout the litigation process, including during particularly sensitive stages of a claim.
  • Supervising and delegating work to junior lawyers, legal executives, paralegals and support staff where appropriate.
  • Ensuring high standards of file management, client service, time recording, billing, confidentiality and professional conduct.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of developments in clinical negligence, healthcare law, civil litigation, medical practice and healthcare regulation.
  • Contributing to business development initiatives across the healthcare sector, including article writing, networking and attending or presenting at specialist healthcare events.
