We are seeking a Principal Solutions Architect to be a senior technical authority within Dotmatics Professional Services, responsible for defining and governing end-to-end solution architectures for customer implementations of the Dotmatics Luma platform — including its role as the orchestration backbone connecting scientific informatics, data pipelines, and physical lab execution environments. The role combines deep technical architecture expertise with an appreciation of scientific R&D workflows. The Principal Solutions Architect ensures that solutions are not only functionally correct, but also meet rigorous non-functional requirements around performance, scalability, security, reliability, observability, maintainability, and long-term operability.

This trusted technical advisor role is highly customer-facing and works closely with Sales, PreSales, Product, Engineering, Cloud Operations, and Siemens Digital Industries Software (DISW) architecture teams. It plays a key role in joint Siemens engagements, positioning Luma alongside technologies such as Teamcenter, Mendix, Opcenter, and other DISW portfolio solutions — particularly where scientific workflows intersect with industrial automation and lab execution.

In this role you will get to:

  • Architecture & Design Authority
    • Act as the design authority for Luma-based customer solutions, including end-to-end lab orchestration architectures that span scientific informatics, data infrastructure, and physical lab systems.
    • Define logical and physical architectures covering applications, data, integrations, identity, environments, and operations.
    • Architect solutions that bridge the digital and physical lab — connecting experiment planning, protocol authoring, and scheduling through to execution on automated instruments, workcells, and robotic platforms.
    • Ensure architectural consistency across multiple customer engagements.
    • Make and document architectural trade-offs considering cost, complexity, scalability, risk, and long-term sustainability.
  • Functional & Non-Functional Requirements
    • Shape functional requirements in collaboration with Scientific Architect and Application Scientists, including workflow automation requirements that span study design through instrument-level execution.
    • Own non-functional requirements including performance, scalability, security, resilience, observability, accessibility, internationalisation, and maintainability.
    • Translate business and scientific needs into robust technical architectures, including requirements for automated, auditable lab workflows in regulated environments.
  • Integration, Data Architecture & Lab Orchestration
    • Design integration approaches using technologies such as Apache NiFi, APIs, batch pipelines, and event-driven patterns — including real-time instrument data streams and workcell status events.
    • Define data ingestion, transformation, and migration strategies that accommodate the high-frequency, heterogeneous data generated by automated lab environments.
    • Architect solutions that enable experiments to transition seamlessly from planned → scheduled → executing → data captured with minimal manual intervention, leveraging Luma as the orchestration layer.
    • Define integration patterns with lab automation and scheduling platforms (e.g., Thermo SiLA/SAMI, Tecan FluentControl, Overlord, Momentum, Synthace) and instrument connectivity layers (SiLA2, LADS, OPC-UA, vendor APIs).
    • Architect solutions leveraging Databricks, including configuration via Databricks SQL, for aggregation and analysis of instrument and experimental data at scale.
    • Ensure data lineage, auditability, and regulatory compliance across the full experimental data lifecycle, from instrument output through to structured scientific records.
    • Support visualisation and analytics patterns using tools such as Sigma for Databricks.
  • Platform and Enterprise Integration
    • Architect Luma solutions that integrate with customer enterprise systems including: ELNs (Dotmatics & third-party), LIMS, SDMS, PLM, ERP, MES, instrument data systems, and lab automation schedulers.
    • Define how Dotmatics fits within broader Siemens landscapes, including Teamcenter, Mendix, Opcenter, and SIMATIC, particularly in environments where scientific R&D and industrial/manufacturing processes converge.
    • Scope and design integrations with third-party scientific platforms including ELN/LIMS providers (e.g., Benchling, LabVantage, IDBS, LabWare), scientific data analysis tools (e.g., Spotfire, JMP, Pipeline Pilot, Geneious), and lab automation platforms — ensuring coherent data flow and workflow continuity across the full stack.
    • Define sample tracking, workcell scheduling, and instrument connectivity architectures as part of broader lab orchestration solution design.
  • Security, Reliability, and Operations
    • Apply security best practices covering IAM, data protection, tenancy, and compliance, including considerations specific to connected lab environments and OT/IT boundary management.
    • Design for high availability, resilience, and disaster recovery.
    • Define observability strategies including logging, monitoring, and alerting — extended to cover automated lab execution environments and instrument connectivity layers.
    • Ensure architectures are operable by support and cloud teams post go-live.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Act as senior technical advisor to customers, including IT leadership, enterprise architects, and lab automation/informatics leads.
    • Partner with Sales and PreSales during solution shaping, scoping, and risk assessment — including technical qualification of lab orchestration opportunities and defining the boundary between digital and physical automation scope.
    • Represent Dotmatics architecture in joint Siemens engagements and architecture forums, particularly where Luma's orchestration capabilities complement Siemens industrial automation and digital factory solutions.
    • Work with Siemens and non-Siemens partners as a peer architect ensuring architectural alignment across joint delivery models.
  • Technical Leadership & Enablement
    • Provide architectural guidance to other Solution Architects, Technical Leads, Application Scientists, and Delivery Partners on lab orchestration patterns and integration architectures.
    • Review designs and implementations for architectural compliance.
    • Raise the overall architectural maturity of the Dotmatics Professional Services organisation and partner ecosystems, including in the emerging discipline of connected and automated lab design.
    • Create reusable architectural artefacts including reference architectures, lab orchestration integration templates, instrument connectivity patterns, and design decision frameworks.
  • Partner Enablement
    • Act as the architectural authority for partner-led implementations of the Dotmatics Luma platform, including orchestration-heavy deployments involving lab automation hardware and third-party scientific software.
    • Enable system integrators, Siemens partners, and regional delivery partners through architectural guidance, design reviews, and technical enablement sessions.
    • Define reference architectures, integration patterns, and implementation guardrails for partners — including guardrails for digital-physical integration scope and instrument connectivity standards.
    • Support partner onboarding by defining 'how Luma should be implemented' from an architectural and non-functional perspective.
    • Ensure partner-delivered solutions meet Dotmatics and Siemens standards for scalability, security, operability, and maintainability.
    • Collaborate with Partner, Sales, and Services leadership to define where Dotmatics retains architectural ownership.
    • Act as an escalation point for complex architectural issues arising in partner-led engagements, including those involving multi-vendor automation environments.

We are looking for people who have 10+ years with scoping automated scientific workflow-based solutions, designing enterprise-grade SaaS or hybrid architectures, ideally including experience with scientific informatics, lab automation, or connected laboratory environments.
