About Dorset REC

Dorset Race Equality Council (Dorset REC) is an independent race equality organisation working to reduce inequalities and create opportunities for ethnically diverse communities across Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and Dorset.

Dorset REC works collaboratively with communities, charities, businesses, public sector organisations and education providers to provide practical support, strengthen community voice and influence positive change.

Our work includes independent casework and advocacy, digital inclusion programmes, community engagement, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) training, community research, volunteering, leadership development and strategic partnerships.

Through evidence-led practice and collaboration, Dorset REC helps individuals access services, develop skills, build confidence and improve their wellbeing, contributing to stronger, more connected and inclusive communities across Dorset.

Working alongside Dorset REC staff and partner organisations, volunteers will help people who are digitally excluded develop the confidence and skills needed to access essential online services and participate fully in modern society.

A key part of the role will involve supporting the distribution and set‑up of refurbished laptops, tablets, smartphones and free data SIM cards provided through Dorset REC's partnership with Donate IT.

You will lead Volunteers who will help assess individual needs, prepare devices for use, provide basic demonstrations and ensure recipients can confidently use their technology.

Digital Inclusion Volunteers will act as Digital Champions and will also provide one-to-one and small-group support covering areas such as:

  • Setting up laptops, tablets and smartphones
  • Accessing and using the NHS App
  • Booking GP appointments and ordering repeat prescriptions online
  • Accessing NHS health records and trusted health information
  • Creating and managing email accounts
  • Completing online benefit applications, including Universal Credit
  • Accessing local authority and government services
  • Online banking awareness and fraud prevention
  • CV writing and online job searching
  • Using Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel and Teams
  • Video calling and staying connected with family and support services
  • Online safety, cyber security and recognising scams
  • Responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital tools
  • Signposting individuals to additional community support and digital learning opportunities

Lead Volunteers who will also support Dorset REC's Digital Café sessions by welcoming participants, delivering practical digital guidance, developing simple learning resources, collecting feedback and helping improve future sessions.

They will work closely with Dorset REC staff, Digital Champions and partner organisations to ensure digital support is accessible, culturally responsive and tailored to the needs of ethnically diverse communities.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain digital concepts clearly and confidently.
  • Confidence using everyday digital technology, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, email, Microsoft 365, video conferencing platforms and online services.
  • An interest in helping people improve their digital confidence and access essential online services.
  • Understanding of digital inclusion, accessibility and the barriers faced by digitally excluded communities.
  • Ability to support people with accessing NHS online services, government services, employment websites and other essential digital platforms.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, with sensitivity to the experiences of ethnically diverse and marginalised communities.
  • Previous experience in volunteering, community engagement, education, customer support or digital training is desirable but not essential.

Full induction, safeguarding training and ongoing support will be provided.
