Job overview

The post will be a part of the Acute Medical team at Dorset County Hospital, taking a share of the on-call duties and gaining exposure to a wide range of medical conditions while being fully supported by a full junior and senior team. This includes access to educational & clinical supervision, internal educational and training opportunities, and funded study leave. An ePortfolio will be provided. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain experience in their chosen specialty, on inpatient, outpatient, or procedure basis, depending on capacity. These sessions may be aligned with the clinical service placement but are not restricted to the area of medicine in which the ST3 is located.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work alongside a team of acute medical consultants supporting daytime admissions, with specialized teams such as cardiology and renal medicine providing focused support. Overnight support from the on-call consultant is accessible, and weekends are covered by two medical consultants who also oversee the post take ward round each day.

Referrals to acute medicine are routed to the ambulatory care unit, with treatment options including the Acute Hospital at Home (AHaH) Virtual Ward service, the medical day unit, and a busy, well-staffed admissions ward with high discharge support.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide core services supporting safe ward care and participate in the acute medical on-call rota. This includes consultant-led ward rounds and other ward duties specific to the area.

On-call duties involve liaising with GPs regarding unselected medical admissions and emergency department referrals to ensure high-quality care.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

  • Medical Degree (MBBS, MChB, or equivalent)
  • Full GMC registration and license to practice
  • Full MRCP or equivalent

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • At least 3 years of clinical experience in general medicine
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • 1 year of clinical experience in the UK
  • Experience in the relevant specialty is desirable
  • Experience of multidisciplinary working
  • Ability to work independently

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships across teams
  • Understanding of clinical governance and individual responsibilities

AUDIT AND RESEARCH

  • Knowledge of medical and clinical audit principles, with involvement in two audits in the last 18 months
  • Understanding of scientific research principles
