One Dorset Pathology (ODP) are seeking an exceptional individual to join our senior leadership team. Your role will be overall management and strategic development of our NHS microbiology laboratory service throughout the county of Dorset. The service is currently provided out of three laboratories; one based at Dorset County Hospital and one at each of the University Hospitals Dorset sites (Poole Hospital and the Royal Bournemouth Hospital). A transformation programme is currently underway to consolidate the Poole and Royal Bournemouth Hospital laboratories at our recently commissioned, state-of-the-art, ODP hub on the Bournemouth site. This program is expected to be completed during January 2025.

We provide a full bacteriology and virology diagnostic service for primary and secondary care and invite HCPC registered candidates with suitable laboratory management and microbiology specific expertise to apply. Strong candidates will bring a broad set of honed leadership skills and a proven track record of leading change. You will be highly motivated and capable of delivering the ODP vision in a dynamic environment, spanning two individual NHS trusts.

Responsibilities include:

  • Operational planning, organisation, and delivery of quality diagnostic services within One Dorset Pathology.
  • Managerial responsibility for non-clinical staff in the Microbiology services on the three sites within Dorset.
  • Forming part of the senior management team within the pathology service, taking a key role in the direction of the service.
  • Strategic planning and implementation of developments.
  • Ensuring resources are used effectively and efficiently whilst adhering to Trust Standard Financial Instructions (SFIs).
  • Operational delivery of all local and national targets relating to service standards and turnaround times.
  • Effective liaison with service users in line with the Pathology strategy, developing services across the healthcare community both locally and within Dorset.
  • Local compliance with all relevant legislation and accreditation frameworks as assessed by bodies such as UKAS, MHRA, HTA, HSE and CQC.
  • Lead operational role in the laboratories for implementation of the Pathology Quality Management system.

It is an incredibly exciting time to join One Dorset Pathology. This network is a collaboration between Dorset County Hospital, Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole Hospital, the latter known as University Hospitals Dorset. We have recently gone through a very large program of change including alignment of our laboratory information management system across the county, implementation of a managed service contract for the majority of services, and the design and construction of a new purpose-built hub laboratory based on the Bournemouth site.
