The Senior Inventory Manager is responsible for leading the operational delivery of inventory management and supply chain services across all UHD sites within the One Dorset Procurement Service (ODPS). The role focuses on ensuring the efficient planning, procurement, storage, and distribution of goods required for frontline clinical services. This includes overseeing inventory teams, managing warehouse operations, and ensuring that stock levels, purchasing activity, and financial controls align with organisational policies and support patient care.
The post holder works closely with clinical teams, procurement specialists, and external suppliers to ensure that materials and products are available when needed, while also driving cost efficiency and compliance. They play a key role in analysing data, improving processes, implementing system developments, and contributing to strategic supply chain initiatives across the trust and partner organisations. The role also carries significant leadership responsibility, including staff management, training, and performance oversight, as well as accountability for ensuring adherence to governance, financial regulations, and health and safety standards.
Experience
- Essential criteria: Relevant qualification or experience in inventory management, supply chain, or procurement (e.g. CIPS, degree, or equivalent experience), with evidence of ongoing professional development. Strong knowledge of inventory systems, operational purchasing processes, and warehouse operations.
- Desirable criteria: Experience working in a purchasing/supplies function, ideally within the NHS or public sector. Experience implementing GS1‑compliant inventory systems and processes.
Technical Skills Competencies
- Essential criteria: Ability to analyse data, prioritise workloads, and coordinate work plans using IT systems (e.g. Excel, inventory software). Experience in using inventory management software and data capture devices.
- Desirable criteria: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Leadership and Communication
- Essential criteria: Effective communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and influence others. Good organisational, time management, and leadership skills, with the ability to develop and support staff.
- Desirable criteria: Ability to influence colleagues and overcome barriers to ensure correct inventory management processes are followed.
Personal Attributes
- Essential criteria: Flexibility to work across sites and adapt to operational demands, including travel and occasional shift/weekend work. Able to concentrate for frequent periods throughout the working day whilst maintaining the ability to manage interruptions in order to support/advise team colleagues and refocus on a variety of operational issues which may arise.
- Desirable criteria: Able to influence colleagues regarding correct inventory management processes and overcome barriers to communication.
