As part of the Sleep Center team, the Polysomnographic Technician contributes to the Hospital’s mission by conducting diagnostic sleep studies and therapeutic services, and providing patient education to help diagnose sleep disorders. The role improves patient and physician satisfaction by delivering a high-quality experience and accurate therapeutic diagnostic sleep studies.

Responsibilities:

  • Gather and analyze patient information by reviewing physician orders for specific tests.
  • Greet patients and assist them in completing questionnaires.
  • Explain pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures.
  • Prepare room and equipment for use, collaborating with necessary equipment and verifying proper function, making adjustments as needed.
  • Apply electrodes and sensors to patients according to AASM guidelines.
  • Perform physiological collaboration and adjust as necessary.
  • Perform CPAP mask fitting.
  • Conduct sleep study and monitor patient for proper function of all PSG channels throughout the study.
  • Compile and document routine observations, including sleep stages, clinical events, or any changes during the study.
  • Initiate proper therapeutic intervention using CPAP, Bi-PAP, or oxygen administration as necessary.
  • Transfer sleep studies to the server.
  • Process billing charges for patient study in the automated system.
  • Upon completion of required training and competencies, may assume charge role at the discretion of the sleep center supervisor.

Physical and Mental Requirements / Conditions:

The employee must have the physical and mental abilities to perform the duties listed above using the WE CARE behaviors. Employees will have contact with potentially hazardous chemicals. Employees may have contact with blood, bodily fluids, or other potentially infectious materials. The physical and sensory ability requirements may vary based on patient and operational needs.

Qualifications:

Education Required: Successful completion of a nationally recognized accredited Polysomnographer program of at least one year duration, associated with a state-licensed and/or nationally accredited educational facility.

Experience consistent with the requirements for successful completion of an ASTEP program and prerequisites required to be eligible to sit for the BRPT examination.

OR Must be enrolled in or have completed training in polysomnography in a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) program with the polysomnography option.

Preferred: Associate of Science degree in Respiratory Care or clinical training course from an American Society of Electroencephalogram Technicians (EEG).

Experience Required: Basic computer skills.

Preferred: Prior Polysomnographic experience.

Other Skills/Knowledge Required: For safety and quality reasons, must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English with patients, visitors, and fellow hospital team members.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications Required: Registry-eligible upon hire. Must become registered with the BRPT or equivalent credential within one year of hire. For non-registered technicians enrolled in CAAHEP or CoARC program, must become registered with the BRPT or equivalent credential within one year of program completion.

Preferred: Registered upon hire. LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Basic Life Support.

Population Specific Requirements: Adolescents, Adults, and Geriatrics.

Professional Commitment Requirements: Keep abreast of developments in the field and/or licensure through continuing education, participation in professional organizations or a combination of both.

Schedule requirements: Works nights, may occasionally rotate to days.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to the Sleep Center Manager. Not responsible for supervising the work of others.

Pay Range: $28.00 - $37.68 per hour.
