GE Vernova is looking for an exceptional Principal Engineer – HVDC Systems Engineering to join our Electrification team based in Stafford, UK or Berlin, Germany. As Principal Engineer – HVDC Systems Engineering, you lead the development of safe, reliable, and commercially effective HVDC system solutions that help customers connect power, strengthen networks, and support the energy transition.
How You Will Make a Difference
- Leading the overall HVDC technical solution to meet customer requirements using reference solutions and sound engineering judgement.
- Developing integrated HVDC scheme designs by defining subsystem ratings, functionalities, and interfaces in an optimized and cost‑effective way.
- Planning execution strategies with team leaders, supporting engineering estimates, and identifying risks, issues, and mitigation plans for new opportunities.
- Defining and maintaining technical specifications, guidance notes, and engineering standards for HVDC systems and high‑value high‑voltage equipment.
- Managing the lifecycle of key high‑voltage equipment, including transformers, reactors, capacitors, instrument transformers, and surge arresters, from requirements and specification through supplier management, validation, testing, manufacturing, and commissioning.
- Delivering reliability, availability, and maintainability studies, as well as electrical losses modelling, to provide clear technical insight and support lifecycle decision‑making.
- Providing expert technical input to design reviews, project proposals, customer negotiations, supplier audits, and cross‑functional problem solving across manufacturing, supply, and field activities.
- Improving engineering tools, operational processes, systems, and technical solutions to enhance customer value, business efficiency, product introduction, cost performance, and schedule adherence.
- Representing GE Vernova externally with customers, suppliers, professional bodies, conferences, and academic institutions, while supporting innovation and intellectual property activities including patent evaluation.
- Mentoring engineers, supporting technical development and succession planning, and contributing to hiring and promotion discussions within the engineering community.

- You are a technically deep, commercially aware, and collaborative engineering leader who combines HVDC expertise with strong judgement, communication, and a drive to solve complex power system challenges.
- The ability to lead HVDC system design and studies, translating customer needs into practical, robust, and value‑driven technical solutions.
- The capability to work across power system design, circuit analysis, power control, reactive power design, and broader HVAC and HVDC system engineering topics.
- An understanding of high‑voltage equipment specification, design, testing, and lifecycle management, including transformers, reactors, capacitors, switchgear, instrument transformers, transducers, surge arresters, bushings, and insulators.
- An expertise in electrical power systems modelling and analysis, including awareness of network studies and the ability to assess system performance, losses, and technical risk.
- Knowledge of key technical areas such as reliability, availability, and maintainability, insulation coordination, harmonic analysis, power quality, radio frequency interference, electromagnetic compatibility, and audible noise assessment and mitigation.
- Familiarity with tools used in power network analysis, electromagnetic transient studies, reliability assessment, audible noise studies, requirements management, and technical scripting or modelling, such as PSS/E, DIgSILENT, PSCAD, EMTP‑RV, ATP, ReliaSoft, Isograph, SoundPLAN, DOORS, Python, MATLAB, Simulink, and VBA.
- The ability to communicate clearly in English, build well‑supported technical arguments, influence stakeholders, and work effectively with customers, suppliers, and multidisciplinary global teams.
- A collaborative and thoughtful approach to technical leadership, planning, negotiation, team facilitation, risk and opportunity management, and engineering decision‑making.
