The EHS Manager is the independent EHS assurance lead for the EGL-1 HVDC Project, providing strategic leadership across the full project lifecycle to ensure risks are identified, assessed and controlled before activities commence. The role functions as an independent assurance authority, giving Project Leadership and the Client confidence that EHS risks are being effectively managed, with the authority to escalate risks and impose readiness hold points where safe execution has not been demonstrated.

EHS Assurance Leadership: Lead all project EHS assurance activities; develop and maintain the Project EHS Assurance Plan and governance framework. Manage and develop 2 x Project EHS Specialists. Provide independent, evidence‑based EHS inputs to support Project Leadership decision‑making and act as GE Vernova’s EHS assurance focal point with key stakeholders.

Mobilisation & Construction Readiness: Lead mobilisation readiness assessments for all principal work packages and conduct site readiness reviews. Verify welfare, first aid and emergency preparedness arrangements are adequate. Manage formal readiness gate reviews and hold point decisions.

Design Safety & CDM Assurance: Conduct CDM 2015 compliance reviews; provide assurance on duty holder performance. Review and challenge design risk registers and support interface management with the Principal Designer and Client CDM duty holders. Promote safe‑by‑design principles and elimination of hazards at source.

Constructability & Construction Risk: Lead constructability workshops during design development. Provide independent assurance of contractor EHS management arrangements throughout construction. Plan and conduct EHS audits, inspections and assurance reviews across project work packages.

Fire, Life Safety & Commissioning: Review fire strategies and life safety provisions at design and construction stages. Lead commissioning readiness reviews; verify EHS controls are in place before energisation. Support operational handover readiness.

Governance & Performance: Develop and maintain the EHS Governance Plan; maintain assurance dashboards covering readiness, audit performance and action close‑out. Prepare executive‑level EHS assurance reports for Project Leadership and client reporting.

Candidate Profile

Education & Qualifications: Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, EHS or equivalent. NEBOSH Diploma or recognised equivalent; Chartered status (CMIOSH or equivalent) preferred.

Experience: Extensive EPC project delivery experience in the power, energy or infrastructure sectors. HVDC or high‑voltage substation project experience desirable. Experience leading multidisciplinary EHS teams.

Technical Skills: Strong working knowledge of CDM 2015 Regulations and duty holder management. Demonstrable experience in design safety management, commissioning and energisation safety, and constructability review. Strong audit and independent assurance skills.

Soft Skills: Excellent stakeholder management; proven ability to influence without direct authority. Strong communication, facilitation and presentation skills. Experience in executive reporting to senior project and client leadership. High proficiency in English (oral and written); proficient in MS Office.

Work Requirements: Role will be 50% on‑site at EGL‑1 and 50% working from home / office. The role requires regular attendance at EGL1 Murton Converter Station, Murton, County Durham, SR7 8SA and EGL1 Torness Converter Station, East Lothian, Dunbar, EH42 1. Candidates must be willing and available to work across both sites. Ideally, the candidate will be based in a location that enables practical commuting access to both sites. Permanent permission to work in the UK.
