Job Summary: The Senior Manager, Origination & Structuring will play a pivotal role securing grid access for Equinix’s strategic markets. This role requires deep understanding of energy markets, engagement with utility and IPP partners, contract negotiation, large load grid connections, and understanding of energy policy changes. The Senior Manager will lead efforts in Western European markets (UK, Netherlands, France, Germany) with progression into additional markets within the EMEA region over time.
Responsibilities:
- Power origination: Identify power development opportunities within regions that meet DC build timelines and strategy. Source energy from developers, utilities, IPPs, on-site generation or hybrid approaches.
- Energy contract negotiation: Lead commercial structuring and negotiation with utilities and IPPs including carbon-free physical or virtual PPAs and Energy or Retail Supply Agreements.
- Utility and IPP Relationship Management: Own relationship with current and potential utility and IPP partners. Oversee negotiation of structured energy contracts ensuring timely, reliable, and cost-effective power supply for Equinix’s global operations.
- IPP Agreement Oversight: In coordination with Energy operations, manage and oversee agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), ensuring that contracts align with the company’s energy procurement goals and compliance requirements.
- On-Site Power Generation & Storage: In coordination with Global Design and Construction, evaluate OSPG and storage options for long-term power needs, bridging solutions, and grid services.
- Power Availability Strategy: Assist in the development and execution of strategies to ensure continuous and reliable power availability across all Equinix facilities, considering both current needs and future growth.
- Market Analysis and Strategy: Monitor and analyze energy markets, regulatory changes, identifying trends and opportunities that inform the company’s long-term power strategies in close coordination with Regional and Global Public Policy teams.
- Technical Leadership: Provide expert guidance on power regional power strategy, including origination, utilities/IPP management, and regulatory changes, ensuring that the company’s power infrastructure is delivered on time, reliably, and aligned with industry best practices.
- Project Oversight: Contribute to power strategy for new and existing developments from origination through energization and ongoing relationships with power providers.
- Legal and Regulatory Compliance: Collaborate with the legal team to navigate the complexities of utility agreements and IPP contracts, ensuring all contracts are compliant with local regulations and company policies.
- Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks associated with power procurement, utility connections, and IPP agreements, ensuring the company’s energy needs are met without compromising on quality or cost-effectiveness.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Proven years of experience in energy, utilities, or infrastructure sector with a strong focus on origination, development, and regulatory functions.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Energy Management, Business, or a related field. Advanced degree or certifications in energy management or project management preferred. Applicable real-world experience in wholesale or retail power markets will also be considered.
- Technical Expertise: Extensive knowledge of existing and emerging energy systems, utility connections, IPP agreements, and EU energy markets, with the ability to apply this expertise in a strategic context.
- Project Management: Proven track record managing large-scale projects from inception to operations, ideally in energy or data center development.
- Contracting experience: Strong understanding of the legal and regulatory aspects of utility agreements, IPP contracts, and energy procurement.
- Energy Market Insight: Deep familiarity with the EU energy and digital-infrastructure regulations, permitting frameworks, and transmission planning policies.
- Language – English primary with German, Spanish, or French language skills an additional plus.
