We are excited to be growing our incredible London Legal team and are looking to hire a Legal Counsel with a payments and regulatory background in London. As Legal Counsel, you will work closely with all areas of the business and take a collaborative approach to solving complex legal challenges. You will be expected to advise on compliance with financial services and payments regulations, interact with regulators and assist in the implementation of broader regulatory projects and product launches across the Checkout.com group.

The successful candidate will be able to handle a busy workload with minimal supervision, demonstrating excellent critical judgment, quick thinking and agility. This is a great opportunity to work on a broad range of projects across multiple jurisdictions, learn new areas of law and play a key role in supporting the company’s rapid growth. You will be joining an expanding team in one of Europe’s most valuable fintechs. How You’ll Make An Impact

  • This role is based in London at our global head office and sits within the regulatory vertical of our Legal department.
  • Support relationships with regulators on license-related matters, including potential de novo applications.
  • Review payments product structures, flows and terms to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
  • Advise on payments regulatory matters, including compliance with payments laws and related regulations across our different jurisdictions.
  • Advise on broader regulatory requirements applicable to payment services providers, including with respect to group regulatory change projects.
  • Advise the business on market expansion, researching and evaluating new territories and applying for new licenses or expanding the scope of existing licenses.
  • Advise key business functions on new regulatory developments impacting our operations, products and contractual commitments.
  • Conduct research on various multi-jurisdictional legal issues.
  • Support the company’s strategic projects and initiatives by providing creative, proactive and results-orientated advice.

What We Are Looking For

  • Qualified solicitor/lawyer (3-7 PQE) with strong post-qualification experience either in-house or in private practice.
  • Strong understanding of legal principles applicable to payments in the UK, including the payments ecosystem and payments regulatory and licensing strategy/execution, and to broader financial institutions.
  • Previous FinTech, payments, software, e-commerce and/or bank experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience working in a start up or other fast-paced and dynamic environment is desirable but not essential.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, constant change, and a fast-paced culture.
  • A practical, solutions-oriented focus to solving legal challenges.
  • Experience working internationally and on a variety of cross-border matters.
  • Excellent time management skills and experience managing a diverse workload and competing stakeholder demands.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as needed, flexing the approach as the matter requires.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate and explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely.
  • Enthusiasm for new challenges and skilling up in different areas of law.
