Lead Wards RVN will collaborate with the Head of Nursing Services, Lead RVNs, Clinical Director and clinicians across the hospital to ensure the efficient delivery of outstanding patient care, particularly within the wards and ICU. The role remains primarily clinical, covering wards nursing and care for inpatients across all disciplines, upholding clinical quality standards in relation to IV catheter, fluid therapy, feeding tube, central line, urinary catheter, wound drain and trach tube maintenance & care, nutritional management, anaesthesia recovery, physiotherapy and critical care nursing. A focused role is scheduled and prioritised within the wards department; occasionally assisting other areas. Induction involves rotation through services for understanding hospital workflow and responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provision of a high and sustainable quality of patient care by you and your team, primarily within the wards and ICU services.
- Prioritise inpatient care and the implementation of nursing care plans.
- Ensure the comfort and safety of patients undergoing investigations, hospitalisation and surgery.
- Take responsibility for the management of infectious cases, including educating team members about infectious and zoonotic diseases and barrier nursing.
- Provide leadership within the nursing team, including line management of those working in wards, ICU and multi‑disciplinary teams, covering recruitment, performance management, hosting meetings and rota coordination.
- Liaise with Lead Twilight RVN for wards management throughout a 24‑hour period, including SOP development, protocol implementation and policy updates.
- Ensure accurate record‑keeping, especially regarding anaesthetic and hospitalisation records in SmartFlow.
- Ensure equipment is appropriately maintained and serviced.
- Maintain effective communication with surgery and anaesthesia teams.
- Work with Lead Nurses, Team Leaders and HoNS to develop a skills matrix for nursing requirements within wards, ICU and out‑of‑hours.
- Assist with stock management and coordinate with pharmacy and purchasing assistant.
- Participate in team briefings, meetings, incidents and near‑miss reflections, including Halo reporting.
- Support cat‑friendly and dog‑friendly standards in line with ISFM, Dogs Trust and BVBA.
- Engage in team committees such as Sustainability, Culture & Wellbeing or Dog/Cat‑Friendly committees to shape impact, culture and standards.
- Seek opportunities to maintain competence in other nursing areas and participate in role swaps when suitable.
