We are seeking an experienced, pragmatic leader to own and drive contracts strategy, governance and delivery for Guy Carpenter’s UK P&C and Europe portfolios. This role combines deep technical expertise in reinsurance contract wording with proven operational leadership: setting standards and processes, building capability, and ensuring consistent, accurate contract output. The successful candidate will be a trusted partner to broking teams, segments and Centres of Excellence and will lead a matrixed team of subject‑matter specialists to deliver high‑quality, compliant documentation that supports our client and business objectives.

We will count on you to:

  • Promote the regional contracts strategy and standards, ensuring alignment with global policy, group risk appetite and market practice.
  • Oversee the quality of treaty and facultative contract documentation.
  • Develop and expand a proactive, strategic advisory offering to advise clients directly on contracts, interpretation and market standards.
  • Keep abreast of market developments, regulatory change and emerging risks; translate implications into practical wording changes and client communications.
  • Draft, review, refine and advise on complex treaty wordings and clause language; provide authoritative interpretation and technical guidance on clauses, exclusions, claims and accounting treatment to brokers, account teams and clients.
  • Act as the regional escalation point for contract interpretation issues.
  • Promote process modernisation and operational excellence, including refinement of templates and clause libraries, and continuous improvement of workflows and metrics.
  • Monitor and report on operational performance and quality metrics; identify risks and lead remediation initiatives to maintain service standards.
  • Provide training and capability‑building for internal stakeholders on contract construction, interpretation and market standards; contribute to knowledge management and training materials.
  • Lead and develop a small, matrixed team and liaise with global counterparts to ensure consistent standards and outputs.

What you need to have:

  • Demonstrable technical capability in reinsurance or (re)insurance contract drafting and interpretation, with experience supporting treaty wordings and negotiating wording outcomes.
  • Proven ability to interpret complex contract issues and produce clear, practical wording and guidance for brokers, underwriters and clients.
  • Strong working knowledge of reinsurance concepts and contract provisions across proportional and non‑proportional treaty structures.
  • Excellent drafting, written and verbal communication skills with experience engaging senior broking, underwriting and client stakeholders.
  • High proficiency in MS Office (Excel & PowerPoint) and experience with contract drafting platforms or clause libraries.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; legal qualification, CII or insurance‑related professional qualification is highly desirable.

Reporting lines: will typically manage 1–3 direct reports. Location and scope: primary location London (Tower Place); regional responsibilities across UK and Europe.

What makes you stand out:

  • Prior experience working with UK and European regulatory frameworks.
  • Formal legal training (e.g., LLB or admission as a solicitor/barrister) or equivalent legal qualifications.
  • Experience implementing or managing contract drafting platforms, clause libraries or automation initiatives.
  • Demonstrable experience leading cross‑border or matrixed teams and collaborating effectively with global counterparts.
  • Strong coaching and capability‑building experience, with a focus on embedding best‑practice contract standards.
  • Track record of delivering operational improvements, defining metrics and remediating risks to maintain service quality.
