The Fire Instructor plays a key role in the delivery, coordination, and continuous improvement of the Firefighter Foundation Development Programme. The FSC is embarking on transformation that will see the curriculum move from a traditional model to hybrid delivery that maximises our unique assets and facilities whilst still delivering high quality theoretical learning. Our aim is to take a ‘digital first’ approach that maximises the use of teaching technologies in effective ways. At the centre, is the ambition to create a world-class learning experience whilst being the leading thinker in Fire and Rescue training. To ready ourselves for this journey we are looking to enhance the Learning Delivery and Transformation Team with people who can bring innovation in teaching and learning, experience of embedding a blended learning approach into an educational context, and who are keen to drive forward resilience training of the future.
Responsibilities
- To provide a professional teaching capability to support learning and development across the range of FSC courses, fire & rescue service qualifications and wider private sector training.
- To undertake the duties of an instructor including delivering feedback to delegates and when required act as a syndicate lead as part of personal development.
- Responsibility to ensure the health, safety and welfare of learners, colleagues and visitors, and delivery off site at other training venues.
- To support the FSC annual delivery plan by actively seeking opportunities, broadening skills to support the requirement for delivery tutors to be skilled in a range of specialist areas, and assist with the delivery of courses that fall outside of these.
- Promote our core values and an organisational culture that positively reflects best practice on equality and diversity issues and that meets the Fire Service College’s legal and ethical obligations.
- You must promote a positive attitude towards the development and maintenance of a Health and Safety culture through all aspects of the organisation.
About You
- Qualified Firefighter instructor with experience in a uniformed training environment (preferably Fire & Rescue Service or a recognised fire training establishment).
- Strong understanding of the Fire Sector and working knowledge of the Qualifications and Curriculum Framework.
- Nationally recognised training qualification (AET L3 minimum) plus relevant assessor awards; willingness or ability to obtain Internal Verifier accreditation.
- Holds (or is working towards): SFJ Level 3 BAI, SFJ Level 3 TVI, CFBTI Level 3 or equivalent.
- Competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Proven ability to work effectively within a team and deliver excellent customer service.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.

The Fire Service College (FSC) is a world-renowned further education training college that provides a range of resilience focused courses and programmes ranging from apprenticeships to fully accredited qualifications. On a 300-acre site FSC provides both practical and classroom-based learning in addition to remote/customer site delivered courses. FSC courses and programmes are accredited with SFJ Awards, Highfields, Institution for Fire Engineers, FireQual, Lantra, JOIFF and Proboard/NFPA. Customers range from fire and rescue services, police forces, ambulance services, the military, various commercial organisations to individuals who wish to further their careers. FSC attracts learners from international fire and rescue services from the Middle East and across Europe.
