Help us use technology to make a big green dent in the universe! Kraken powers some of the most innovative global developments in energy. We’re a technology company focused on creating a smart, sustainable energy system. From optimising renewable generation, creating a more intelligent grid and enabling utilities to provide excellent customer experiences, our operating system for energy is transforming the industry around the world in a way that benefits everyone. It’s a really exciting time in energy. Help us make a real impact on shaping a better, more sustainable future.

What we do: build the most AI-driven, innovative, forward-thinking platform for energy management. From optimising resources to delivering cost-effective, exceptional customer experiences through advanced Customer Information Systems (CIS), billing, meter data management, CRM, and AI-driven communications, Kraken is powering the next wave of innovation in the energy industry.

Why we do it: future energy will not look like energy as we know it today. We need to not just think about our future, but build for it. Now.

Our team: Frontend Platform is a multi-disciplinary product group that builds shared frontend systems, tools, and standards so teams across Kraken can ship consistent, accessible, enterprise-grade experiences faster and with less duplication. We partner closely with product, engineering, design and UX to provide the foundations that power Kraken Customer. We also own key cross-cutting capabilities like frontend architecture/developer experience, design tokens and UI patterns, instrumentation standards, and access/permissions patterns. In order to facilitate this remit we require engineers who are capable of working across the frontend and backend.

Our technology: On the server-side we primarily use Python and Django, with a combination of Django Rest Framework and GraphQL APIs. We leverage AWS heavily, and manage our resources via the Hashistack (eg Packer, Consul, Terraform) as part of a continuous deployment pipeline. Every push to main is a deployment to production, so we ship hundreds of times per day! On the front end our primary customer application uses server rendered templates via Django sprinkled with HTMX and vanilla JS to power interactive features. We have many single page applications spread throughout powered by React JS where there are user experience requirements that demand it (e.g our Live Chat system, Phone system).

What you’ll do: You will have the opportunity to be working on the primary system which powers all of Kraken’s clients’ customer support operations, when you call a client powered by Kraken the energy specialist on the other end of the phone is running this software! Our current focuses are:

  • Access control management - how our clients decide which users have permission to do what.
  • Internationalisation - Kraken is now used across the globe, we need to ensure it’s available in everyone’s native language!
  • Accessibility - how can we make Kraken software usable for everyone, no matter what their needs are!

With exciting projects in our future:

  • Embedded Apps - How our clients embed their own applications within Kraken.
  • Design System - working with our excellent design team to expand our existing component library into a holistic design system and how that translates to UX patterns within the app.
  • Frontend Platform - creating a set of reusable tools to enable software engineers across Kraken, to own the whole lifecycle of an application’s development.

What we’re looking for: This is a mid-level engineering role, 3+ years of experience is ideal.

  • Django / python experience. Equivalent server side framework / language experience also fine!
  • React JS experience. Equivalent framework experience is also fine!
  • Experience working with SQL databases PostgreSQL preferred.
  • Curiosity, this is a role where you’ll have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of tech / products across the entire stack.
  • Takes the initiative, self‑organised with an attention to detail.
  • We are a remote‑first team and don’t micromanage, for this to succeed we require our engineers own their work and act as their own driver.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.

As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. We consider all applicants without regard to race, colour, religion, national origin, age, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, marital or veteran status, disability, or any other legally protected status. Studies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire.
