Thales develops and engineers cutting‑edge products and technologies such as autonomous platforms (air and maritime), high‑performance sonar arrays, Air Traffic Management systems, electronic warfare and counter‑measure systems. As part of the UK Safety Team you will have the opportunity to lead safety engineering activities on complex projects while continuing to develop your safety engineering knowledge.
We’re recruiting for a System Safety Engineer who either has experience of defence systems or has worked within safety‑critical industries and would be eager to gain experience in defence and aerospace. If you don’t have aerospace or defence experience, but you are particularly interested in complex engineering challenges, we would welcome a discussion with you – we have had great success from candidates from related industries such as Oil & Gas, Rail, Medical and Automotive.
Role & Responsibilities
- Undertake activities identified in Safety Management Plans as directed by the Project Safety Manager
- Record and archive project safety requirements and ensure they are included on the project design baseline
- Identify and analyse accidents, hazards and risks
- Create and maintain project Hazard Logs, including appropriate traceability to the causes, consequences, risk control measures and assumptions
- Collate and configure evidence necessary to complete Safety Assessments/Cases
- Capture, report and resolve safety issues
- Create reports and artefacts to support safety assessments and cases, including deliverable items
Experience and Skills Required
- Bachelor’s Degree (BEng, BSc) or equivalent in a numerate, scientific or engineering subject or higher education training and experience
- Experience in Naval Combat Systems or Highly Integrated Systems
- Working knowledge of Safety Management System processes, having regularly implemented SMS processes to meet project requirements
- Familiar with different types of safety analysis techniques (FTA, Event Tree, FMECA, RBD, LOPA, QRA) and their application
- Understand safety assessment processes, how they meet requirements and have implemented them on safety programmes
- Familiar with, and understand the requirements and purpose of Safety Management Plans, having implemented them for simple products and managed the work package activities
- Familiar with processes by which safety requirements are captured, recorded and managed
- Know standards and can identify sources of safety requirements (Def Stan, BS EN, ISO, IEC, etc.)
- Good working knowledge of formal Hazard ID and risk assessment methodologies (HAZID, HAZOP, FHA, BowTies, etc.), knowing which is appropriate to use and having implemented them on projects
