The opportunity
Door 10 is recruiting an experienced media and communications professional for an established organisation operating within the UK's financial services regulatory framework.
This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys combining proactive media engagement with creative campaigning, helping an organisation communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences.
Our client is looking for a confident communications professional who can identify opportunities to tell compelling stories, build productive relationships with journalists and ensure that important organisational messages reach the people who need to hear them.
The successful candidate will bring strong media relations experience, excellent editorial judgement and the ability to navigate complex or sensitive issues while maintaining a proactive approach to external communications.
This is a hands-on role offering considerable ownership of media activity and communications projects, alongside opportunities to advise senior colleagues and contribute to wider organisational priorities.
The role
Working within an established communications function, you will help shape the organisation's external profile through a combination of press engagement, creative storytelling, campaign delivery and strategic communications advice.
You will be expected to work independently, manage competing priorities and identify opportunities to strengthen the organisation's reputation and relationships with important audiences.
Your responsibilities will include:
Developing stories and delivering campaigns
- Identify opportunities to turn complex subjects and organisational developments into engaging stories for external audiences.
- Plan and deliver communications campaigns that achieve clear objectives and measurable results.
- Develop high-quality written content and supporting materials for media and other communications channels.
- Work with external agencies and partners to coordinate communications activity.
- Find creative ways to communicate important announcements, research and organisational developments.
- Act as a key point of contact for journalists, responding to enquiries and identifying opportunities for positive coverage.
- Take a proactive approach to media relations, identifying opportunities to engage journalists, develop new contacts and secure coverage rather than relying solely on incoming enquiries.
- Support senior colleagues with media preparation, messaging and external communications advice.
- Exercise sound judgement when handling sensitive issues or situations that could affect organisational reputation.
- Monitor news and emerging developments to identify opportunities and potential communications challenges.
Strengthening external communications
- Work with colleagues across the organisation to ensure external messaging reflects wider priorities.
- Provide communications advice and support to colleagues involved in important external activities.
- Help identify opportunities for senior leaders to contribute to relevant public discussions.
- Work independently while ensuring relevant internal stakeholders are consulted and involved in communications decisions, particularly when handling sensitive or high-profile matters.
Measuring results and improving delivery
- Working within an established communications function, you will focus primarily on media relations, corporate communications and PR, working alongside marketing colleagues to strengthen the organisation's external profile and public awareness.
- Use audience insights and performance information to inform future communications activity.
- Explore opportunities to improve efficiency and effectiveness through digital tools, data and emerging technologies.
- Contribute to a collaborative communications team, sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues when required.
About you
We are looking for a media and communications professional who can demonstrate:
- Substantial experience in media relations, public relations, journalism or external communications.
- A strong record of securing media coverage and developing productive relationships with journalists.
- Experience creating and delivering communications campaigns, from initial ideas through to implementation and evaluation.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to make complicated subjects accessible to different audiences.
- Confidence handling media enquiries and advising colleagues on external communications.
- Good judgement and an understanding of how communications decisions can affect organisational reputation.
- Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues at different levels.
- Experience managing several projects simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
- The ability to use research, audience insight and performance data to improve communications.
- A proactive, creative approach and the confidence to take ownership of projects.
Experience that would be particularly valuable includes:
- Working in financial services, financial regulation, government or another regulated environment.
- Working alongside public affairs, policy or corporate communications colleagues.
- Managing relationships with external PR agencies or communications suppliers.
- Using digital technology, automation or AI-enabled tools to improve communications processes.
The successful candidate
You will be someone who combines creativity with sound judgement and enjoys working in an environment where priorities can change quickly.
You will be equally comfortable developing a proactive media opportunity, responding to a challenging enquiry or helping a senior colleague communicate a complex issue clearly.
Above all, you will understand how effective media relations and communications campaigns can strengthen an organisation's reputation, build trust and support its wider objectives.
