We are looking for an Investment Data Specialist with hands-on experience evaluating, sourcing, and validating external market and alternative datasets for hedge fund investment teams. This is not a data analysis, research analyst, or data engineering role. The focus is on data discovery, vendor evaluation, trials, licensing, and investment relevance.
Employment: Full-time, employed by DonePlus, embedded onsite at a hedge fund.
Bonus for: Proven Data Scout / Data Sourcing hedge fund or institutional investment experience.
Mid range: Candidates pivoting from highly relevant hedge fund procurement or compliance roles with strong data exposure.
Travel: Quarterly industry conferences.
You will act as the bridge between investment professionals, data vendors, and internal technical teams — sourcing, evaluating, and onboarding datasets that support trading and research across discretionary and systematic strategies. This is a high-visibility, stakeholder-facing role (≈80%), with hands-on technical exposure (≈20%).
- Identify, evaluate, and source market, equities, and alternative data used for trading and research.
- Research new and emerging data vendors and datasets with alpha potential.
- Attend quarterly industry conferences to discover new data sources.
- Maintain a strong understanding of the data vendor ecosystem.
- Lead end-to-end vendor evaluations, including trials and POCs.
- Assess data quality, coverage, delivery methods, and commercial value.
- Partner with procurement, legal, and compliance through onboarding and contracting.
- Make clear, commercial recommendations to senior stakeholders.
Stakeholder Engagement: Work directly with portfolio managers, analysts, and quants. Confidently discuss data strengths, limitations, and use cases with the investment team.
Technical Collaboration: Collaborate with data engineering and platform teams on integration feasibility. Review and validate datasets using SQL, Python, APIs, and cloud platforms. Identify data gaps and opportunities for improvement.
Data Focus: Alternative data, including consumer, web/app, sentiment, and geolocation datasets. Experience with alternative data platforms and vendor ecosystems is highly valued. Willingness to self-learn new data types over time.
Required Experience & Skills:
- 3-4+ years’ experience in a hedge fund, asset manager, or comparable investment environment.
- Direct Data Scout / Data Sourcing experience (preferred).
- Strong hedge fund procurement or compliance experience with significant exposure to data vendors and contracts.
- Familiarity with major market data providers such as Bloomberg, LSEG, S&P.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Technical exposure to SQL, Python, APIs, and cloud data platforms.
- Commercially minded, detail-oriented, and proactive.
