This is an exciting opportunity to be part of rebuilding and shaping the future of one of the UK’s most promising regional airports.

As part of the airport’s Health, Safety and Fire Safety Team, you will help establish and maintain robust, modern health and safety arrangements that support safe, resilient and compliant operations from day one. We are looking for a confident, credible and collaborative professional who is passionate about health and safety and ready to make a meaningful impact. Your expertise will help embed strong safety standards, support operational readiness and contribute to a positive and proactive safety culture across the airport community.

About the role

We are seeking a Health and Safety Manager to support the development, implementation and continual improvement of health and safety arrangements across all airport operations. The role will provide competent professional advice and assurance across a diverse and complex operational environment, supporting the airport’s commitment to legal compliance, operational excellence and continual improvement. Reporting to the Head of Safety, the postholder will play a pivotal role in maintaining and developing the airport’s Health and Safety Management System, leading investigations, supporting claims management activities, delivering training and undertaking assurance activities across the airport estate. The role also provides resilience within the safety function and will act as the organisation’s competent person in the absence of the Head of Safety. This includes deputising at governance forums, supporting incident and emergency response arrangements, engaging with regulators and providing professional leadership during periods of operational disruption. You will work closely with operational teams, contractors, tenants, regulators and stakeholders to ensure health and safety is fully integrated into all airport activities.

Key responsibilities

  • Supporting and maintaining the airport’s Health and Safety Management System and associated assurance processes.
  • Acting as the organisation’s competent person in the absence of the Head of Safety.
  • Leading and supporting accident, incident, near miss and safety observation investigations.
  • Applying recognised investigation methodologies to identify root causes and organisational learning opportunities.
  • Supporting the management and investigation of claims and loss events.
  • Delivering health and safety training, awareness programmes and competence initiatives.
  • Supporting audits, inspections and assurance activities across all operational areas.
  • Monitoring compliance with health and safety legislation, standards and best practice.
  • Providing professional advice and guidance to managers, employees, contractors and stakeholders.
  • Producing reports, trend analysis and safety performance information to support decision‑making.
  • Working collaboratively with regulators, insurers, enforcement authorities and external assurance bodies.

The successful candidate

We are looking for an experienced Health and Safety professional with a strong practical background in managing risk within complex operational environments. You will have an excellent understanding of UK health and safety legislation and be comfortable interpreting legal requirements into practical operational controls. You will possess the confidence to challenge where necessary, whilst maintaining strong relationships and influencing positive behavioural and cultural change. You will be highly organised, resilient and capable of managing multiple priorities within a dynamic and evolving operational environment. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will regularly engage with colleagues at all levels of the organisation as well as external stakeholders. Experience within aviation, transport, infrastructure, logistics, manufacturing or similarly regulated environments is highly desirable, together with the ability to operate effectively during periods of operational change and growth.

Essential qualifications and experience

  • Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent).
  • Chartered IOSH Membership (CMIOSH) or working towards Chartered status.
  • Accident Investigation qualification (e.g. Kelvin TOPSET, TapRooT, RCA or equivalent).
  • Teaching or Training Qualification (e.g. AET, PTLLS or equivalent).
  • Significant experience in a Health and Safety management role within a complex or high‑risk environment.
  • Proven experience leading or supporting accident and incident investigations.
  • Demonstrable experience managing or supporting claims and loss management activities.
  • In‑depth knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and risk management principles.
  • Experience designing and delivering health and safety training programmes.
  • Strong report writing, communication, organisational and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to influence, challenge and support stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to deputise and provide competent professional leadership in the absence of senior management.

Desirable

  • Experience within aviation, transport, infrastructure or another highly regulated operational environment.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent).
  • Experience supporting or managing Safety Management Systems (SMS).
  • Experience contributing to external audits, inspections and regulatory assurance activities.
  • Knowledge of ISO 45001, behavioural safety and organisational culture programmes.
  • Experience engaging with regulators, enforcing authorities or industry assurance bodies.
  • Membership of additional relevant professional bodies.
