About The Role
We are looking for a reliable and hands‑on
Maintenance Assistant to join the Maintenance team at The Derby London City.
In this role, you will support the Chief Engineer and Engineering team in ensuring the hotel operates safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards across all guest and back‑of‑house areas.
From responding to maintenance requests to carrying out preventative maintenance tasks, you will play a key part in delivering an excellent guest experience while helping to protect the hotel's assets and support our sustainability goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out basic reactive and planned maintenance across guest rooms, public areas, plant rooms, and back‑of‑house facilities.
- Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance requests, supporting guests and colleagues as required.
- Assist with routine repairs including painting, decorating, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and general maintenance tasks.
- Follow all Health & Safety, fire safety, COSHH, and company procedures, using appropriate PPE at all times.
- Complete scheduled preventative maintenance tasks and assist with daily plant room checks.
- Keep accurate maintenance records and assist in updating job logs and handover notes.
- Support energy conservation initiatives and environmentally responsible practices throughout the hotel.
- Assist in reducing external contractor costs through effective in‑house maintenance.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised working environment, including workshops, stores, and plant rooms.
- Provide a professional and guest‑focused approach when working in occupied areas of the hotel.
- Key Skills
- Practical maintenance skills with a proactive and solution‑focused approach.
- Basic knowledge of building services including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting and decorating, and general repairs.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment.
- Good time management, organisation, and attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills and a friendly, professional manner.
- Understanding of Health & Safety and safe working practices.
- Basic IT skills for logging maintenance requests and completing records.

About You
- You have previous experience as a Maintenance Assistant, Handy Person, Caretaker, or in a similar maintenance role.
- Previous hotel, hospitality, property, or facilities maintenance experience is desirable but not essential.
- You are proactive, dependable, and take pride in delivering high standards of work.
- You enjoy solving problems and completing tasks efficiently.
- You remain calm under pressure and can prioritise workloads effectively.
- You are flexible, organised, and detail‑oriented.
- You bring a positive, team‑focused attitude and enjoy supporting colleagues across the hotel.
- You are motivated to contribute to cost control, energy efficiency, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- You are eager to learn new skills and develop your career within hotel engineering and maintenance through training and experience.
