About the Role
The Machine Learning (ML) Engineer apprenticeship follows an external training programme to develop skills across the entire ML lifecycle—from data preparation to monitoring of deployed AI solutions. The role sits within our Data Platform team in R&D, working alongside data scientists, software engineers, and DevOps engineers to design, build, and deploy machine learning solutions using knowledge gained in the training programme. Ideal for candidates who want to link data science, software engineering and DevOps, this apprenticeship focuses on deploying secure, maintainable ML solutions to solve complex business problems.
For those with less data science/ML knowledge, progress to the level 6 ML Engineer role can begin with the Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship, which builds competence in Python libraries, data visualisation tools, and database work. Upon successful completion, progression to level 6 ML Engineering is available. Both routes offer rotations across teams, providing a broad range of projects and expertise. Apprentices also have the opportunity to join the Automate UK apprentice network to develop professional skills outside the key focus area.
