Health Sciences Academic Advisor
Position Summary: The Health Sciences Academic Advisor provides comprehensive academic guidance to Pre‑Nursing and other Pre‑Health students pursuing health science degrees. As a member of the Advising Team, the Advisor partners with faculty, staff, and students to deliver holistic advising services that support academic development, retention, and engagement. The role also collaborates across divisional units to address institutional barriers to student success, with a continued focus on supporting Hispanic student achievement.
Key Responsibilities
Advising
- Provide comprehensive, holistic advising services to a diverse undergraduate student population.
- Maintain a caseload of students pursuing a major within the Borra College of Health Sciences (BCHS) who have not yet met prerequisites or who have recently changed their BCHS major.
- Collaborate with BCHS faculty, staff, and other university departments to provide workshops, test preparation, and student success/retention initiatives.
- Serve on university committees that enhance the work of the Student Success & Engagement division.
- Participate in professional development to deepen expertise in the advising profession.
- Support Title V A3 grant requirements.
Orientation
- Assist in academic advising for new students (first‑year & transfer) during all SOAR programs (summer & winter).
- Support admissions events such as visiting days, Discover Dominican, Express Transfer events, etc.
Retention
- Assist efforts to improve retention and graduation rates; report relevant data required by the Title V A3 HSI Grant to the Office of HSI.
- Serve on the Student Care Team to design interventions for students with academic and interpersonal challenges.
- Make timely referrals for on‑ and off‑campus resources supporting academic success, physical/mental health, basic needs, financial stress, career exploration, and more.
- Perform other duties as required and/or assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- 1–3 years of experience in academic advising or higher education.
- Proficiency in MS Office and student database systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; team‑building and cross‑cultural interpersonal skills.
- Specific experience assisting students in meeting academic, professional, and personal goals.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Effective collaboration with university students, faculty, and administrators.
- Availability to work some nights and weekends.
- Experience working with and communicating to underrepresented groups.
- Strong time‑management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
Physical Demands
- Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for long durations.
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
Salary and FLSA Status
- Salary: $45,000 – $54,000 annually.
- FLSA Status: Exempt, 37.5 hours.
