As part of the National Design team with Doman Building Solutions for Engineered Wood Products (EWP) Services, the EWP Designer/Estimator prepares take-off designs of engineered floor and roof systems for our customers. Products include beams, joists, columns, connectors, adhesives, rim boards, and sheathing.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares professional floor design drawings, quotes, and material lists using proprietary design software.
  • Consults with roof truss plants, lumber dealers, architects, engineers or builders regarding project plans and design issues or specifications as required.
  • Maintains project files with pertinent information and maintain/update the design department’s job tracking system as needed.
  • Sizes individual structural members using our proprietary software or using product design tables.
  • Specifies all necessary supplied hardware and provides technical support to internal staff and/or external customers.
  • Provides sales and customer support when necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural blueprints.
  • General knowledge of the construction industry and terminology.
  • Knowledge of building materials, engineered wood products, and building codes.
  • Ability to calculate tributary load, concentrated loads, and load transfer through a building.
  • Ability to resolve design problems and ability to be creative in finding solutions by communicating directly with sales, vendors and customers.
  • Already a user of technical design software and capable of learning new proprietary software applications.
  • Good keyboarding skills and computer skills; very comfortable with Excel, Word, Outlook.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Able to communicate well graphically, orally, and in writing.
  • Proficient in English; bilingual (English and French) is an asset.
  • Able to work well under pressure to meet deadlines.

Experience

  • 2 years of experience with design work and blueprint knowledge; preferably with engineered wood products.
  • Technical design/drawing experience required.
  • Previous experience using Mitek Sapphire Structure or Supply would be considered an asset.
  • EWP estimating experience is an asset.

Education

  • Architectural Technologist training or equivalent is required.

Compensation and Benefits

The typical hiring range for this position is $55,000 - $62,000 annually. The base pay offered is based on geographical location and may vary depending on the applicant’s job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity. Similar positions located in other geographical locations may not necessarily receive the same salary range. The compensation information is an estimate and provided to meet with applicable provincial Pay Transparency legislation.
