Role Description

The Marine Claims Handler role is a full-time, hybrid position based in Radlett, just outside London, with flexibility for some work from home.

The role involves handling and managing marine cargo and hull claims from initial notification through to resolution.

This includes assessing policy liability, evaluating claim documentation and coordinating with insurers, assureds, claimants, surveyors, lawyers, carriers and other stakeholders.

The Marine Claims Handler will investigate losses, gather and analyse evidence, negotiate settlements and support claims recovery efforts, including matters involving General Average and Salvage.

Day-to-day responsibilities include maintaining accurate records, preparing clear and concise reports, ensuring timely communication with clients and service providers, and contributing to the continuous improvement of claims processes and client service.

Qualifications

  • Professional working proficiency in English and Mandarin Chinese, both written and spoken, is required.

The position involves regular correspondence with Chinese-speaking insurers, claimants, surveyors and other service providers, together with the review and preparation of Chinese-language claims documentation.

  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to review complex claim documentation, interpret policy terms and assess liability and recovery prospects.
  • At least two years of relevant experience in claims handling or claims management, preferably within marine or transport insurance, including end-to-end case management.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to provide responsive and professional support to underwriters, assureds and other stakeholders.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear reports and correspondence and negotiate settlements.
  • Knowledge of marine insurance principles, cargo claims and casualty matters, including General Average and Salvage, is highly beneficial.
  • Ability to work accurately under time pressure, manage multiple cases and maintain close attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively under a hybrid working arrangement, including collaboration in the Radlett office and independent work from home.
  • Relevant professional experience in insurance, shipping, law or a related field.

Formal qualifications in law, insurance, maritime studies or a related discipline would be an advantage.
