We’re looking for a Senior Design Engineer who combines technical ability with a sensitivity to form, materials, and the human experience—someone who thrives in a fast‑paced, multidisciplinary studio environment and is passionate about turning visionary ideas into reality. As a Senior Design Engineer, you will play a critical role in developing design concepts into manufacturable products. You’ll collaborate closely with industrial designers, strategists, and management to ensure that every detail—from materials and mechanisms to assembly and performance—aligns with our design intent and sustainability values. This is an opportunity to work on high‑profile, forward‑thinking projects for global brands, start‑ups, and cultural institutions.
DUTIES
- Translate the client’s briefing into components through innovative and reliable mechanical product development.
- Design and develop mechanical systems, keeping in mind budget, timelines, and essential resources.
- Develop detailed 3D CAD models and assemblies suitable for prototyping and production.
- Oversee the entire lifecycle of the mechanical system design process, from planning and design to testing and implementation.
- Work with industrial designers to refine form, ergonomics, and CMF details.
- Research and keep up with the dynamic technology, processes, and materials relevant to advanced product development.
- Manage prototyping, testing, and validation of design concepts.
- Liaise with external engineering partners, suppliers and manufacturers.
- Balance aesthetic, functional, and commercial considerations throughout the design process, ensuring BLOND standards are met.
- Contribute to the development of motor-driven assemblies and electromechanical subsystems, from concept through functional prototype.
- Support early‑stage system architecture decisions, including actuation, sensing, packaging, and basic control considerations.
SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES (REQUIRED)
- BEng or MEng Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- At least five years of industry experience (post‑graduation).
- Exceptional 3D CAD skills.
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, tolerancing, DFM/DFA, and manufacturing processes (e.g., injection moulding, CNC, additive manufacturing).
- Experience designing motor‑driven and electromechanical systems, including gearboxes, transmissions, bearings, and key performance considerations (e.g. torque, speed, duty cycle, efficiency).
- Practical prototyping experience involving functional mechanisms, test rigs, or early proof‑of‑conception builds.
- Working knowledge of electronics and control hardware (e.g. motors, drivers, power supplies, simple displays or sensors).
- Familiarity with rapid prototyping, 3D printing, workshop practices, and coordinating with external prototype suppliers and manufacturers.
- Creativity and innovation‑focused, with a passion for high‑quality design.
- Strong time management and organisational skills in a fast project‑based environment; proactive, self‑motivated, and adaptable.
- Confidence in client‑facing communications.
- Comfortable leading small engineering workstreams or mentoring junior team members.
- Excellent documentation and presentation skills—able to communicate technical ideas clearly in internal and client‑facing settings.
- Enthusiasm for emerging tools and technologies that enhance design and engineering quality.
- Strong design sensibility with an interest in working across multiple sectors and disciplines.
- Eagerness to contribute to a collaborative, tight‑knit team culture and act as a brand ambassador for the studio.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English are required.
- Willing to travel internationally for meetings/development workshops.

The position will be based in our London office (Hackney, E2). Working from home is offered (one day per week). Please note we do not offer working from abroad; all employees are expected to be in our London studio a minimum of 4 days a week. Overseas applicants are very welcome, but they must hold a valid British Citizenship or a valid right to work in the UK (please note, we do not offer any visa sponsorships).
