We’re reinventing payments. In less than four years, Dojo disrupted the market to become the largest and most loved acquirer in the UK. Our payments infrastructure, purpose-built for in-person commerce, is game changing. Now, over 150,000 customers across four countries choose to transact billions with us every year. But we’re just getting started. Our people are the driving force behind our success. They are our greatest investment and our ultimate competitive advantage. We hire exceptional people and give them the autonomy, trust, and ownership to thrive. The results take care of themselves.

The role

You are an experienced Product Design leader who has architected and scaled a design system that has helped a scale-up grow by creating efficient delivery and a consistently high bar for product design. Our design system foundations are in place, and we need the right leader to drive us forward into the next chapter as Dojo scales. You bring a track record of success in central design roles, where you’ve employed strong personal skills to foster collaboration across teams. You have the pragmatism to meet this business where it is at. You have an opinion on ‘perfect design system’, but you can translate that into a phased approach that doesn’t throttle teams in the short term, while building for long term efficiency. This is a key role in a motivated product design chapter of 20+ people, and reports directly into the Director of Product Design. As a player/coach, you are a proven motivator of people who can comfortably speak in both detailed, engineering-friendly specifics, but also strip that back to drive a meaningful, strategic conversation with product leadership. At Dojo we’re mindful that the route into Product Design can be varied and diverse - we like and encourage that, both in terms of experience and our people. We are after someone who is driven, humble and will contribute passionately to our design community at Dojo.

What You Will Do

  • Manage the design system team: You will be responsible for hiring and developing the right talent to build out our design system.
  • Own Dojo’s approach to systems: You will be responsible for translating the what and why into the how - what design of system delivers the right outcomes and behaviours?
  • Define how our system evolves: Collaborate with Engineering and Product teams to build a system and make sensible adjustments and optimisations that keep us on track as our products, token set and components mature.
  • Drive system adoption: Work closely with engineers and designers across teams to gather real‑world context for new component needs and actively drive the adoption of existing design system components.
  • Champion system integrity and quality: Enable design reviews and QA on coded components and demo app examples to ensure they are flawlessly executed, accessible, and accurately reflect component variants.
  • Scale multi‑platform excellence: Architect and deliver components across Android, iOS, and Web, translating refined UI concepts into robust, scalable, and production‑ready assets.
  • Optimise through feedback: Transform designer and engineer insights into actionable system enhancements, ensuring the library evolves in lockstep with the needs of the business.
  • Foster team culture: Cultivate a high‑bar feedback culture and elevated visual craftsmanship that drives a more refined user experience and continuous improvement.

What You Will Bring

  • Expert‑level design systems experience: Created tokenised design systems, balancing design and engineering needs, going beyond basic Figma assets - A unified system serving both disciplines.
  • Leadership experience: A strong portfolio demonstrating a proven and pragmatic approach to leading empowered centralised design system teams that has delivered results.
  • Design system component creation: You can still roll up your sleeves and collaborate with Product Designers to translate intent into robust, scalable, accessible components across iOS, Android, and Web.
  • Collaboration with Engineering: Great components are designed with an understanding of how they will be built, and an awareness that design systems are a shared language between design and engineering.
  • Accessibility expert: A detailed understanding of minimum accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) and user impact.
  • Design system workflow: Knowledge of component/token governance processes; fluent in engineering and design language.
  • Awareness of code frameworks: Basic understanding of React/native mobile patterns/constraints. Demonstrable understanding of semantic HTML and CSS.
