Job Description
Are you ready to be part of a team of talented engineers and shape the future of Tunnelling & Underground Structures? The AECOM Tunnelling team is looking for an individual to lead our growing Tunnelling and Underground Structures Team. This role combines leadership and people management, the technical engineering challenges of a fast‑paced sector, and client engagement. The team has approximately 15‑20 engineers and a pipeline of exciting design projects in the UK and abroad.
You will work closely with a similar sized London based team and be expected to contribute to the strategy and direction of the UK tunnelling business, reporting to the UK Director of Tunnelling. In addition to office leadership, you will participate in the delivery of a range of projects from a technical perspective. The role requires passion for design and delivery, mentoring, and strong communication skills.
Job Duties
- Ensure safety is the primary concern of all team members, including carrying out risk assessments and implementing safety controls. Encourage reporting of incidents and near misses and report regular safety observations.
- Coordinate and contribute to local work‑winning and business development activities, actively develop and maintain relationships with public sector and contractor clients and stakeholders. Lead production of proposals for new commissions and undertake reviews of commercial proposals matched to resourcing schedules.
- Provide accurate data and forecasting to the Regional Lead for Tunnelling, reporting on leading and lagging indicators of safety, financial performance, work pipeline and related issues.
- Define and influence workplace culture, set tone for communication and collaboration, raise morale, job satisfaction, productivity and efficiency in a supportive environment.
- Set clear ethos and values for the team, foster collaboration and inclusive communication, create clear goals and rewards, and establish and maintain client and industry relationships to position AECOM for successful tendering and leadership.
Qualifications
- Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant field such as Civil or Geotechnical Engineering with post‑graduate experience in a Leadership role with a Tunnelling team.
- Chartered Engineer (EI, ICE, IStructE or equivalent recognized professional institution).
- Excellent written and spoken communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in rock and soft ground, tunnels, shafts and deep excavations for transportation, energy and utility schemes.
- Experience working on large, multi‑disciplinary projects and ability to engage with and understand the requirements of different disciplines and interfaces. Expected to undertake roles such as Technical Lead, Design Manager or Project Manager and lead bids.
