About the role

Reporting to the Technical Team Leader, the Azure Consultant will be responsible for the design and delivery of secure, resilient and cost-conscious Microsoft Azure solutions for our customers. The role spans infrastructure, identity, networking, migration, governance, automation and operational readiness, with Azure Virtual Desktop forming an important but not exclusive part of the portfolio.

You will work across the full customer engagement lifecycle, contributing to discovery and pre-sales, translating business and technical requirements into clear designs, implementing and testing solutions, and supporting a controlled handover into service. You will collaborate with multiple customers, as well as DA project managers, architects, consultants and operational teams. You will be expected to take ownership of technical project quality, and clearly communicate decisions, risks and trade-offs.

The role suits a hands-on consultant who can confidently navigate between customer workshops, solution design, configuration and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

Solution discovery and design

• Lead discovery workshops and technical assessments for defined customer-facing workstreams and engagements within the consultant’s area of competence, translating customer objectives, constraints and existing-state information into practical Azure requirements.
• Design Azure solutions covering landing zones, subscriptions, management groups, identity and access, networking, compute, storage, backup, disaster recovery, monitoring and governance as relevant to the engagement.
• Apply security, reliability, cost optimisation, operational excellence and performance considerations when evaluating options and documenting design decisions.
• Produce clear high-level and low-level designs, implementation plans, bills of materials, estimates, assumptions, risks and dependencies, and obtain appropriate review and approval.

Azure and AVD delivery

• Configure, migrate, integrate and validate Azure services using repeatable and supportable methods, including infrastructure as code and scripting where appropriate.
• Design and deliver Azure Virtual Desktop components when required, including host pools, session hosts, application delivery, identity, profiles, image management, connectivity, monitoring, security and scaling.
• Plan and execute testing, cutover and rollback activities, maintaining evidence and escalating technical or delivery risks early.
• Troubleshoot complex issues across Azure, identity, networking, endpoint and virtual desktop components, coordinating with Microsoft or third parties where necessary.

Customer, project and operational collaboration

• Act as a visible technical consultant clearly explaining recommendations, dependencies and trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Work closely with DA project managers to maintain realistic plans, sequencing, estimates, risks, issues, dependencies and change control.
• Prepare operational documentation and knowledge transfer and support a controlled transition from project delivery into the Doherty Managed Services team or the customer operating team, depending on the engagement and agreed support model.
• Maintain accurate timesheets, project records and technical documentation to support billing, governance and reporting.

Pre-sales and practice development

• Support pre-sales discovery, assessments, workshops and solution shaping, providing technically sound scope, assumptions, estimates and risk input.
• Contribute to proposal and design peer reviews, ensuring recommendations are deliverable, secure, supportable and aligned to customer objectives.
• Develop reusable standards, templates, automation and lessons learned and share knowledge with colleagues through mentoring and technical sessions.
• Maintain current Azure knowledge through structured learning, practical experimentation and relevant Microsoft certifications.

Other

• Attend the office and customer sites as required
• Support occasional planned out-of-hours implementation activity (reasonable notice always provided)

Experience and skills

Essential

• Strong working knowledge of Azure infrastructure: subscriptions and governance, Entra ID/RBAC, virtual networks, compute, storage, backup/recovery, monitoring and security controls.
• Ability to produce supportable Azure designs that address reliability, security, cost, operations and performance trade-offs.
• Hands-on delivery of customer-facing Azure projects through discovery, design, implementation, testing and operational handover.
• Experience of migration or modernisation engagements involving on-premises, hybrid or cloud infrastructure.
• Can lead technical workshops, explain options and risks clearly, challenge constructively and secure decisions from customer and internal stakeholders.
• Can create realistic technical estimates, manage scope and dependencies, maintain accurate project records and recognise impacts on time, cost and quality.
• Able to attend the office and customer sites as required, and support occasional planned out-of-hours implementation activity with reasonable notice.

Desirable

• Current Azure certification aligned to the role, or demonstrable equivalent capability. AZ-104 is strongly preferred.
• Practical knowledge of automation or infrastructure as code, for example PowerShell, Azure CLI, Bicep, ARM or Terraform.
• Working knowledge of AVD architecture and delivery, including host pools, profiles, images, identity, networking, application delivery, monitoring and scaling.
