Assistant Director of Communications & Public Relations

A major North London local authority is seeking an experienced and visionary Assistant Director of Communications & Public Relations to lead a high‑performing, multi‑disciplinary communications function. This is a senior, strategic role shaping how a large, diverse borough engages with residents, businesses, partners and national stakeholders.

Working closely with Cabinet members and the Strategic Leadership Team, you will define the organisation’s communications narrative, set annual priorities and deliver a modern, digital‑first approach that strengthens trust, transparency and community engagement.

What You’ll Lead

You’ll head a talented team of around 20 communications professionals covering media, digital, campaigns, internal communications and film office activity. Your responsibilities include:

  • Developing and delivering the corporate communications strategy and annual programme of campaigns aligned to organisational priorities.
  • Leading proactive reputation‑building work and managing high‑profile issues and incidents.
  • Overseeing accessible, high-quality content across digital channels—including the corporate website and social platforms.
  • Ensuring all communications are inclusive, culturally competent and shaped around the needs of diverse communities.
  • Driving internal communications that support organisational change and staff engagement.
  • Managing a significant communications budget and income‑generating activity.
  • Providing trusted counsel to senior politicians and executives.
  • Overseeing film‑related operations and strengthening commercial opportunities.

About You

You will bring extensive experience leading multi‑disciplinary public sector communications teams, with:

  • Strong understanding of local government and the pressures facing public services.
  • Excellent media management and public affairs expertise.
  • High political awareness and confidence advising elected members.
  • Strong analytical skills, including audience insight and evaluation.
  • Inclusive leadership capability and resilience when operating under pressure.
  • First‑class communication and stakeholder skills.
