Digital Matte Painters at DNEG create photo-realistic matte paintings that are used as elements to either enhance or replace live action footage. You will be adept in working with varied media, including live action footage, still photography, rendered CG elements, and digital painting to create believable environments on high end VFX feature films.

Our DMP artists work within a global, supportive and multi-talented team altering and extending environments in live action plates or designing, composing and painting environments from the smallest blade of grass to entire galaxies. They need excellent communication skills to collaborate and interact with multiple departments and colleagues around the world, ensuring their work integrates with the rest of the pipeline. Supported by your team, you will be able to utilise and develop your diverse skill set.

Your tasks may include creating panoramic backgrounds, 2.5D projections and painted enhancement of CG renders as well as developing Nuke setups that allow integration of DMP elements across multiple shots or sequences.

  • Must have exceptional ability to use digital painting techniques to create highly detailed, realistic environments that accurately match light, colour and depth when integrated with CG and live action.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of Photoshop and Nuke and willingness to continuously learn new software and techniques.
  • Ability to research, collate or create high quality reference and source imagery to ensure authenticity.
  • Ability to utilise shoot data, including lens and camera information along with photography, lidar or photogrammetry to ensure seamless integration with live action.
  • Experience and understanding of managing colour space within a pipeline.
  • A full understanding of perspective as a basis for in the creation of digital environments.
  • Technical proficiency in photography, cinematography and traditional art fundamentals with an emphasis on design, composition, depth, lighting and color.
  • Understanding of the VFX Pipeline including both 2D and 3D workflows.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of 3D image projections techniques in Maya and Nuke.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to be able to clearly present creative ideas and technical information to Supervisors and colleagues.
  • Professional aptitude for time management in relation to bringing multiple priorities and tasks to completion within a set deadline.
  • A showreel demonstrating experience in the creation of photoreal digital matte paintings for motion pictures.

Nice to have:

  • Experience modelling geometry for 2.5D projections.
  • Experience with ideation and developing concept designs.
  • Experience with rendering in Houdini Solaris and/or Unreal Engine.
  • Experience using generative models, tools and workflows.
