GP Billing / Remuneration Model in Australia
GP billing in Australia is primarily through bulk billing, where the doctor bills Medicare directly and the patient pays nothing out-of-pocket, or private billing, where the patient pays a fee and receives a partial rebate from Medicare. Many practices use a mixed-billing model, combining these options depending on the patient and service. GPs have the flexibility to choose how to bill but must be transparent about costs. On average most GPs take home between $2000 - $2500 per day based off a 65-70% margin split with a guaranteed hourly rate for the first 3-6 months while you are settling into the practice.
Patient numbers
A general practitioner in Australia sees between 20 and 40 patients per day, though this can vary based on factors like practice size, location, and administrative demands. For example, larger clinics may see more patients, while suburban GPs might see fewer due to the nature of their practice.
Eligibility
You may be eligible if you hold the following:
- Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP)
- Membership of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP)
- Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST) or Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)
- MRCGP awarded from August 2007 onward
- CCT awarded by the GMC or the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board
- Confirmation of Specialist or GP training from the GMC
