Metro.co.uk delivers news, features, sport, opinion, and shareable content to a fast-growing global audience and we are looking for a Deputy News Editor to join the London team, with a strong focus on video-led storytelling. You will be responsible for pitching, writing, producing, commissioning and editing video and written content of interest to our audience, distributed widely across Metro.co.uk and social platforms. The role encompasses news editing to support the News Editor and stepping up into that role when required. The job involves managing editorial production processes across text and video, assisting with news page editing, news gathering, copy editing, headline writing, and overseeing the integration of video into daily news coverage.
Working closely with the news team, video team and social editors, your responsibilities will include:
- Producing written and video-first content for the website and digital platforms
- Identifying stories with strong video potential and shaping them for social and on-site audiences
- Delivering vibrant copy and compelling video scripts while working to very tight deadlines
- Generating original news stories, with a keen eye for surfacing compelling visual and shareable content
- Managing workflow, research and production schedules to deliver stories and videos to tight deadlines
- Coordinating with reporters, video producers and editors to ensure content is produced efficiently and on time
- Editing and commissioning video content, ensuring accuracy, tone and brand alignment
- Operating the content management system for publication of written and video stories
- Monitoring analytics across written and video content, adjusting strategy to optimise KPIs and audience growth
- Producing and overseeing coverage of significant news events, including fast-turnaround video explainers, live or near-live clips, and social video formats
We are looking for professionals with the following:
- Significant newsroom experience, ideally within a fast-paced digital environment
- Proven experience working with or commissioning video news content
- The ability to work under intense deadline pressure, including during breaking news
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including scriptwriting and video briefing
- Strong knowledge of multiplatform news gathering tools, including video, social and UGC resources
- A passion for research and for finding the most interesting and visually engaging information
- Strong communication skills to work collaboratively with reporters, video producers and editors
- Prior experience managing reporters and/or producers
- The ability to establish strong production processes across text and video
- Experience managing breaking news and identifying content that engages and grows a digital audience
- The ability to direct, develop and maintain the quality and output of rolling, 24-hour digital news, with video as a key driver of reach and engagement
