The i Paper is looking for a Senior Social Editor with extensive experience bringing digital journalism to audiences on social media. As one of the newsroom’s audience specialists, this person has a thorough understanding of social platforms and applies that knowledge to distribute The i Paper’s journalism, repurposing it into engaging content for each platform, in a swift, impactful and above all accurate manner.
You will be a data-savvy decision maker, using on- and off-platform analytics to drive both everyday priorities and long-term strategy. In addition to sharing The i Paper's journalism on social platforms, you’ll also work with reporters and editors across the newsroom on how to build our off-platform community and widen the reach of our brand. This role also works closely with other members of the Audience Team to support the newsroom's wider digital publishing strategy. This role is a 12-month fixed term contract and will report to the Head of Social.
Key areas of Responsibility
- Working with the Head of Social to distribute our content across socials in an impactful socially native style and tone of voice.
- Expanding The i Paper’s community engagement strategies, such as AMAs, to widen the reach of our brand and journalists off platform.
- Developing a thorough understanding of the role that social and other third-party platforms play in the acquisition and retention of digital subscribers.
- Support the development of paid social strategies to reach new audiences.
- Using social platform data and onsite analytics to drive smart decisions.
- Developing a keen sense of audience preferences for each of The i Paper’s key social platforms.
- Constantly working to innovate new formats and posts to maximise reach, engagement and growth of The i Paper's social, third-party referrers and messaging service accounts.
- Developing and maintaining a strong standard for off-platform visual storytelling.
- Write strong and punchy headlines for social, homepage and SEO when required.
- Working with the wider audience team on SEO, newsletters and homepage to develop the skills to cover their output when required.
- Pitch social first ideas to the newsroom and build plans for social content during key news events.
- Good knowledge of media law and the Editors’ Code of Practice.
- Commitment to The i Paper's editorial standards of impartial and incisive coverage.
- Appreciation for i’s audience and tone, and how to write stories that will appeal to our readers.
Key Skills
- At least 3 years of newsroom experience with proven ability to deliver to pressing deadlines and ideate quickly in the face of breaking news.
- Excellent understanding of existing and emerging social media and the differing requirements for each platform.
- Proficient in data analysis tools such as Google Analytics and ability to present insights to senior leaders.
- Experience launching community engagement projects on social platforms.
- Strong communication skills, including ability to pitch ideas well.
- An experimental, creative approach to problem solving.
- Strong news sense, a creative and visual approach to storytelling – and a strong eye for social design and graphics.
