The Daily Mail is seeking a tech-literate and forward-thinking Editorial Innovation Intern to join its cutting-edge Innovation Team. We are looking for an early-career journalist who is genuinely excited about how new technology can enhance journalism and who wants to spend their days building systems in one of the world's biggest newsrooms. Or someone from a tech background who wants to pursue a career in media. High performers will learn future-facing skills and have a clear pathway to transition into a permanent full-time role.
The successful applicant will sit within the Innovation Team, a new team that designs, tests, and ships the AI tools journalists use daily. That work is delivered through Mail iQ, a suite of AI-powered tools which helps journalists across all aspects of their work. Successful applicants do not need a formal background in journalism. But they do need an interest in emerging technology, a passion for news, and a strong desire to learn new ways of telling stories. Experience and experimentation using LLMs, or forward-facing tech platforms/processes are desired.
Key Responsibilities
- AI tool creation: Collaborate with the Innovation Team to design, test, and refine new AI agents and utilities within Mail iQ, dmg’s multi-agentic AI ecosystem.
- Investigations and special projects: Work alongside other desks in the newsroom, such as the award-winning Deep Dive team, on flagship journalism projects to build custom datasets using AI by analysing complex records.
- Content repurposing: Take existing Daily Mail reporting and use bespoke software to translate it into dynamic audio/visual formats, social assets, and other media for global distribution.
- Newsroom integration: Work dynamically across the newsroom to engage with subbing, pictures, graphics, design, social media, and data desks to identify workflow friction and build solutions.
- Journalist research & training: Continuously research new technological developments and translate them into useable information for the journalists. Help run hands-on training sessions to empower reporters and editors to adopt new tools effortlessly.
- Editorial quality control: Ensure that every AI workflow strictly upholds the Daily Mail’s rigorous editorial standards, enforcing human-in-the-loop oversight where accuracy and quality always take priority over raw speed.
Essential Requirements
- Early career status: A recent graduate, or in the early stages of a tech, media, or product career.
- AI & tech fluency: A deep practical understanding of LLMs, prompt engineering, and generative AI platforms. Exceptional capability to learn, evaluate, and master new software and digital tools at speed.
- Passion for News: A genuine interest in current affairs, pop culture, sport, global events, and the future of media.
- Evidence of an interest in the intersection of technology and journalism: Preferably a portfolio of work showing a project, blog, GitHub, newsletter or side hustle that shows it.
Desirable Skills
- AI-assisted coding: Familiarity with using AI coding assistants (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to build quick scripts, web tools, or prototypes.
- Data & visualisation: Experience with data analysis, Excel/Python, or creating interactive visual assets (charts, maps, timelines, graphics).
- Workflow automation: Knowledge of building light automations or integrations (e.g., via APIs, Zapier, Make, or custom scripts).
- Multimedia production: Basic editing skills in visual or audio software (Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Figma, or AI multimedia generators).
- Clear communication: You will need to explain technical concepts to non-technical colleagues.
Not required
- A journalism degree, an NCTJ, or prior newsroom experience.
What We Offer
- Direct path to hire: Exceptional candidates will be considered for immediate, permanent, full-time placement upon completion of the internship.
- Real newsroom impact: The tools you work on will help tell stories to millions of readers globally from week one.
- Cutting-edge experience: Direct exposure to enterprise-level multi-agentic AI development in partnership with leading global technology providers such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon.
- Mentorship: Work directly alongside the Innovation Director, Innovation Editor, and Innovation Engineers, alongside investigative journalists, data specialists, and software engineers.
