The i Paper is seeking a News Editor (maternity cover) to help lead its team of high impact reporters. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to help drive The i Paper's news exclusives and revelatory reporting that provides deep insight. The successful candidate must have proven experience of managing experienced reporters and a demonstrable ability to get challenging stories and investigations over the line. They must have an innovative mindset to drive new formats and methods of digital storytelling, including through social video, to boost engagement with our journalism. This role is a 12-month fixed-term contract, starting from mid-August 2026.

Responsibilities

  • To help lead and inspire our award-winning team of reporters, ensuring their output is having maximum digital impact.
  • To help develop new formats and methods of digital storytelling, finding new audiences where they are.
  • To expand our visual storytelling, enhancing our social video output across our content.
  • To help develop new ways to drive engagement with our journalism, and take the lead in embedding best practice.
  • To manage a mix of reactive exclusive chases on the agenda, news features, and long-term investigations.
  • To take responsibility for managing and executing complex and challenging stories, all the way from idea or tip to publication.
  • To present high impact stories and creative ideas to senior editors in conference.
  • To provide constructive feedback to reporters, helping them prioritise projects which will have maximum digital impact.
  • To work towards team benchmarks for success, ensuring the operation is meeting its digital subscription goals.

Qualifications

  • News Editing experience for a national news publisher or broadcaster.
  • Excellent people‑management skills, and a proven ability to get the best out of experienced journalists.
  • Experience of leading a team, and a desire to be leading from the front in a busy and demanding newsroom.
  • An ability to write and edit news and features quickly and to deadline plus embrace new methods of storytelling.
  • Incisive analytical skills and the ability to approach the news agenda in a creative and original manner.
  • An ambition to take on more responsibility and progress your career towards executive leadership.
  • A thorough understanding of media law and IPSO's guidelines.
  • A commitment to The i Paper's editorial standards of impartial and incisive coverage.
