This role supports the delivery of outpatient respiratory diagnostics and care, focused on performing and interpreting quality‑assured spirometry in accordance with ARTP and NICE guidance. The postholder provides clinical assessment, patient education, and supports chronic respiratory disease management across specialist nurse‑led clinics.
Key Objectives / Goals:
- Conduct and interpret spirometry to ARTP standards
- Support diagnosis and management of asthma, COPD, and suspected respiratory disease
- Provide patient education and lifestyle advice
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and assist in audit/QA
- Support governance, audit and QI initiatives
Reporting Line / Team Structure:
Reports to Respiratory Service Manager; works closely with Respiratory Consultants and MDT.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and calibrate spirometry equipment and maintain QA logs
- Conduct spirometry to ARTP guidelines including reversibility testing
- Educate patients on inhaler use, smoking cessation, and symptom monitoring
- Record clinical data into patient systems (eg SystmOne)
- Liaise with respiratory consultants and GPs for clinical follow‑up
- Support annual reviews for COPD/asthma patients where applicable
- Participate in training, audits, and equipment servicing schedules
- Maintain infection prevention and safe clinic standards
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Expertise:
- NMC registered nurse (adult)
- ARTP-accredited or equivalent spirometry certification
- Demonstrable experience in outpatient respiratory care
- Strong communication and patient education skills
- Leadership and audit participation
Desirable:
- Experience with FeNO, peak flow, or other diagnostics
- Experience in QOF, COPD/asthma reviews, or nurse‑led clinics
- Experience in community/outpatient settings
- Clean driving licence (multi‑site service delivery)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Spirometry testing (pre/post‑bronchodilator)
- Data interpretation and trend tracking
- Use of calibrated diagnostic equipment
- Strong communication, teaching, and service development
- Familiarity with ARTP, NICE NG115, GOLD, and BTS guidance
- Understanding of infection control and diagnostic room protocols
- Ability to coordinate complex cases and elevate clinical concerns
Experience:
- 2+ years post‑registration experience in respiratory or primary care
- Routine delivery and interpretation of spirometry (minimum 1 year)
- Working within outpatient, GP, or community‑based settings
- Experience across primary/community and secondary care
Additional Information:
Multi‑site role across North Lincolnshire – own transport required.
