Health & Safety Lead

Location: Birmingham

Salary/Rate: £70,000 per annum (permanent) | £600 per day (contract)

We\’re looking for an experienced Health & Safety Lead to provide strategic leadership across a major operational portfolio, including fleet, waste management, grounds maintenance, and street cleansing. This high-profile role offers the opportunity to influence safety culture, ensure compliance, and drive meaningful change in services that support the Birmingham community.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a robust H&S strategy across Street Scene services.
• Act as the senior H&S advisor to leadership, providing guidance on risk, compliance, and improvement opportunities.
• Ensure compliance with H&S legislation, including HSWA 1974, PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, CDM, and NRSWA.
• Champion a proactive, behavioural safety culture and empower operational teams.
• Design and deliver strategic H&S training and lead performance reporting.
• Represent the service at corporate boards, audits, and external regulatory meetings.
• Drive continuous improvement and support organisational cultural change.

About You

• Chartered IOSH/CMIOSH (or equivalent professional accreditation).
• Proven experience in senior H&S leadership, ideally within local government or similarly complex, multi-service operational environments.
• Strong understanding of operational risk in fleet, waste operations, street cleansing, and grounds maintenance.
• Confident communicator with excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills.
• Comfortable working across multiple sites in Birmingham; hybrid working available.

Desirable

• Experience supporting service transformation, insourcing/outsourcing, or organisational change.
