Health & Safety Lead
Location: Birmingham
Salary/Rate: Β£70,000 per annum (permanent) | Β£600 per day (contract)
We\βre looking for an experienced Health & Safety Lead to provide strategic leadership across a major operational portfolio, including fleet, waste management, grounds maintenance, and street cleansing. This high-profile role offers the opportunity to influence safety culture, ensure compliance, and drive meaningful change in services that support the Birmingham community.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a robust H&S strategy across Street Scene services.
- Act as the senior H&S advisor to leadership, providing guidance on risk, compliance, and improvement opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with H&S legislation, including HSWA 1974, PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, CDM, and NRSWA.
- Champion a proactive, behavioural safety culture and empower operational teams.
- Design and deliver strategic H&S training and lead performance reporting.
- Represent the service at corporate boards, audits, and external regulatory meetings.
- Drive continuous improvement and support organisational cultural change.
About You
- Chartered IOSH/CMIOSH (or equivalent professional accreditation).
- Proven experience in senior H&S leadership, ideally within local government or similarly complex, multi-service operational environments.
- Strong understanding of operational risk in fleet, waste operations, street cleansing, and grounds maintenance.
- Confident communicator with excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills.
- Comfortable working across multiple sites in Birmingham; hybrid working available.
Desirable
- Experience supporting service transformation, insourcing/outsourcing, or organisational change.
