We are a fast-growing boutique strategy consultancy working at the intersection of media, platforms, regulation and AI. We advise publishers, broadcasters and ecosystem partners on issues including platform/distribution strategy, business model development, licensing and the economics of premium content.
DJB Strategies works with most of the UK’s leading journalistic organisations, including the BBC, Financial Times, Sky News and Telegraph Media Group.
This hire will be employee #2. You will work directly with the founder and have unusual exposure to senior clients from the outset. This is a rare chance to join early and help shape what the firm becomes. The role will offer responsibility, rapid learning, and equity participation for the right person. It is a dynamic, fast-moving environment with ambiguity, tight deadlines, and high standards. It won’t suit everyone, and that’s intentional.
The role and what you’ll do:
- We are hiring someone strong in research, analysis, and modelling, who can also contribute to client-facing delivery.
- The level is flexible: we will hire at Senior Analyst or Associate level, depending on the candidate.
- Mindset and character matter more than years of experience.
- At Senior Analyst level, you’ll execute high-quality research and analysis, build and iterate models and exhibits, and take increasing ownership of discrete deliverable sections.
- You’ll join client interactions and begin presenting your own work with support.
- At Associate level, you’ll own workstreams end-to-end: shape the storyline, translate client questions into a brief, manage stakeholders day-to-day, and lead substantial parts of client delivery (including presenting recommendations and follow-ups).
- Commercial contributions (e.g., expanding accounts, originating opportunities) are expected in time.
Requirements:
- Essential
- Strong media industry understanding (publisher/broadcaster economics, distribution, platforms, and how value is captured).
- Excellent analytical judgement: you can go from question → approach → analysis → insight → recommendation.
- Strong writing and communication: you produce client-ready text, are comfortable presenting to senior audiences.
- Confidence working with numbers and checking your own work.
- Advanced Excel/Google Sheets modelling.
- Strong charting and exhibit craft (clear, decision-grade visuals).
- Experience in/around: AI policy, copyright/licensing, competition regulation, platform partnerships or news publisher strategy.
- Familiarity with AI product dynamics (training vs RAG/inference) and implications for publishers.
- Adjacent expertise in areas such as younger audiences and changing consumption habits, subscription and retention dynamics, and the economics of audience growth (including pricing, churn, and lifetime value).
Responsibilities:
- Strategic analysis
- Build and apply strategic frameworks to explain and guide actions in media businesses and markets, including distribution and platform dynamics, audience and subscription models, rights and regulation.
- Translate analysis into actions, identifying choices, trade-offs, risks, and what to do next, not just ‘what’s happening’.
- Sense-check strategy against real-world constraints (e.g. capability, incentives, legal/regulatory timelines, and market power).
- As scope grows, take ownership for shaping project narratives, leading decision moments with clients, and (at senior levels) helping spot and develop follow-on opportunities.
- Work with media datasets to analyse audience behaviour and content performance, identify meaningful trends, and translate findings into clear implications for strategy and decision-making.
- Work with client and third-party data: clean, sanity-check, and document methodology clearly so it stands up to scrutiny.
- Visualise data to tell stories and support decisions.
- Build and iterate future scenario models using appropriate data inputs; stress-test assumptions and make uncertainty legible.
- Design and run research to answer strategic questions: define hypotheses, choose appropriate methods (desk research, data analysis, interviews/surveys where relevant), and translate findings into clear, actionable insight.
- Track and synthesise industry developments (e.g. policy, legal, technological), separating signal from noise and producing sharp, well-sourced briefs that answer ‘so what?’ and ‘what should we do?’ questions for specific client contexts.
- Join client calls, convert discussions into structured outputs and clear next steps.
- Draft and refine reports and decks; present selected analysis as you ramp.
- Own day-to-day delivery for workstreams as you develop (Associate).
- Communicate confidently and professionally with stakeholders, including explaining methods and trade-offs without overcomplicating.
- Maintain extremely high standards on accuracy, presentation and evidence, and deliver reliably under deadline pressure.
- Improve our repeatable engine: templates, trackers, report formats, and reusable analytical components.
- Raise the quality bar across engagements over time (and help coach/mentor as the team grows, particularly at Associate level).
- Consider commercial growth; new productised offerings, identifying emerging needs, adjacent segments.
Location: UK-based. Hybrid/remote depending on candidate and client needs. Regular (~weekly initially), flexible co-working days in central London.
