We are seeking a dedicated Estimator to join our team in Canterbury. The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for groundworks, civil engineering and infrastructure projects. The role takes ownership of allocated tenders and work packages, analysing drawings, specifications and tender documentation to produce measured quantities, detailed costings and comprehensive tender submissions. The Estimator obtains and evaluates supplier and subcontractor quotations, develops labour, plant and material rates, and identifies risks, assumptions, exclusions and gaps in information to ensure commercial risks are understood and managed prior to submission.
Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed cost estimates and tender submissions for civil engineering, groundworks and infrastructure projects.
- Review drawings, specifications and tender documentation to determine the scope of works and identify risks, assumptions and exclusions.
- Carry out quantity take-offs and build labour, plant, material and subcontractor cost estimates.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers and commercial teams to gather information and develop competitive tender solutions.
- Obtain, evaluate and negotiate supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Prepare bid proposals, pricing schedules and supporting tender documentation.
- Raise technical and commercial queries where tender information is incomplete or unclear.
- Monitor market conditions, supplier pricing and industry trends to ensure competitive and accurate estimates.
- Support project teams throughout the tender process to maximise value and project profitability.
- Maintain accurate tender records, estimate databases and supporting documentation.
- Assist with the handover of successful tenders to commercial and operational teams.
Qualifications and Experience
- Proven experience in estimating within civil engineering or infrastructure sectors.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, costs, materials and labour requirements.
- Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, bills of quantities and tender documentation.
- Excellent numerical, analytical and measurement skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Knowledge of NEC and JCT contracts, schedules of rates and tendering processes.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to liaise confidently with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and internal teams.
- Ability to manage multiple tenders and work effectively under tight deadlines.
- Knowledge of health, safety and environmental requirements relevant to construction and civil engineering works.
