Overview

We are the independent regulatory body for barristers in England and Wales, seeking barrister and lay members for our Independent Decision‑Making Body (IDB).

The IDB makes regulatory decisions that require independent input, operating since October 2019.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for, attend and/or chair panel meetings for enforcement and appeals cases.
  • Attend required training sessions and stay current on matters relating to the regulation of the Bar.
  • Act as panel secretary where requested, supporting drafting of decisions and related documentation.
  • Membership Requirements

Barrister members

Practising barristers or those who have held a practising certificate within the last three years.

Lay members

Individuals who have never been a barrister or solicitor, and who have never been called to the Bar. (Persons ever called to the Bar are considered not lay.)

  • Appointments are for an initial term of up to four years, renewable for a further four‑year term based on satisfactory performance after two years.
  • Remuneration
  • Base rate: £330 per day or £165 per half‑day, with an additional 12.07% for holiday pay and VAT where applicable.
  • Induction and training: £330 per day or £165 per half‑day.
  • Panel meetings: £430 per day or £215 per half‑day, including a loading of £100 per day and £50 per half‑day for reading time.
  • Chair of a panel: additional loading of £100 per day and £50 per half‑day.
  • Panel secretary: £750 per day.
  • Training & Attendance
  • Mandatory induction and training twice annually (June and December) at BSB offices in London.
  • Panel members may attend meetings remotely; however, attendance at in‑person training is required and reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed.
