Overview: This role, based at the University of Sheffield, requires experience in providing technical support for biological research. You will play a key role in supporting ongoing alternative protein research and collaborative projects with NAPIC's industrial partners, contributing to work with tangible, real‑world impact.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a high‑quality, comprehensive and effective technical service.
  • Where required provide cost estimates and timescales for jobs and materials.
  • Provide routine laboratory support (e.g., media and buffer preparation, fermenter preparation, equipment calibration, waste disposal etc).
  • Use, monitor and maintain a range of general and specialist technical equipment to meet the needs of the research team, ensuring minimal impact of faulty equipment.
  • Be involved in the development, testing and construction of new equipment and techniques, including installation, monitoring and maintenance.
  • Carry out commissioning of experimental apparatus and experimental testing; record and disseminate data to staff.
  • Provide technical advice and training/demonstrations in the use of specialised equipment to staff, students and visitors, ensuring health and safety.
  • Contribute to short‑term projects within your own work area or as part of larger project teams to support the achievement of project objectives.
  • Maintain awareness and commitment to health and safety rules, provide safety information, carry out risk assessments, maintain training records and liaise with the School Safety Officer to ensure compliance.
  • Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Higher National Diploma in a biological subject (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience of working in a biological laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of good laboratory practice and health & safety.
  • Effective IT and communication skills, written and verbal, report‑writing.
  • Ability to analyse and solve problems with appreciation of long‑term implications.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical problems and seek relevant advice.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources, plan and progress work activities.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and manage work activities.

Desirable:

  • Experience with fermenters and HPLC/GC systems, and molecular biology and microbiological techniques.
  • Experience of working in a team and developing a network of contacts.
  • Experience of adapting own skills to new circumstances.

Employment Details:

  • Grade: 5
  • Salary: £27,319 – £28,778 per annum
  • Work arrangement: Full‑time
  • Duration: Fixed‑term for 36 months
