The University of Sheffield has an exciting opportunity for someone with a passion for health economic modelling and cost-effectiveness analyses educated to at least degree level. We are seeking highly numerate candidates with experience of health technology assessment to join our internationally‑recognised team. The successful applicant will work within the Health Economics and Decision Science Section as part of a multidisciplinary team supporting and undertaking decision modelling in applied policy and methods research, focussing on the cost‑effectiveness of healthcare interventions.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Perform health economic analyses for the evaluation of health technologies using decision modelling methods.
  • Convey the results of research clearly, in written and oral formats, to both expert and non‑expert audiences.
  • Make substantial contributions to the design, development and writing of research proposals for applied economic evaluations.
  • Contribute research expertise, as required, to other ScHARR research and consultancy projects.
  • Work in multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Liaise closely with a range of staff in the academic, NHS and private sectors, including clinicians, research staff and technicians.
  • Make a full and active contribution to the principles of the University of Sheffield, including excellence in applied teaching and research.
  • Encourage ethical decisions in your role, embedding the sustainability strategy into your work where possible.
  • Plan for the research contribution up to one month ahead.
  • Prioritise own workload on research and academic development.
  • Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Qualifications:

  • Essential: Degree in a numerate subject such as Operational Research, Economics, Mathematics or Statistics.
  • Essential: Postgraduate qualification (or equivalent experience) in a numerate subject such as Operational Research, Economics, Mathematics or Statistics.
  • Essential: Experience of decision‑analytic modelling (e.g. discrete event simulation, state transition modelling).
  • Essential: Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Essential: Working knowledge of programming (e.g. R, VBA, WinBUGS).
  • Essential: Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Essential: Ability to communicate effectively in oral, written and presentation modes in academic and healthcare environments.
  • Essential: Flexibility in approaching tasks and problem‑solving ability.
  • Essential: Respect for confidentiality.
  • Desirable: Experience of designing and undertaking health‑related research.
  • Desirable: Evidence of experience working in multidisciplinary teams.

Further Information:

  • Grade: 7.
  • Salary: In the range £38,784 to £47,389 per annum pro‑rata.
  • Work arrangement: Full time or part‑time (minimum commitment 70% full‑time equivalent); hybrid and flexible options will be considered.
  • Duration: Currently available until 31 March 2027. The end date is due to the completion of the current contract; renewal for a further five years will be decided in May 2026.
  • Line manager: Professor / Senior Research Fellow.
  • Direct reports: N/A.
