Overview
The Engineering and Maintenance team provide a reactive and planning system of works for every building within the university, working in collaboration with other university departments and outside partners to deliver an outstanding, world‑class service. You will directly line manage the mechanical maintenance team in one of the zones, supervising allocation of planned and reactive maintenance across the university campus. You will manage parts procurement and ensure stock levels are maintained, monitor staffing levels and ensure adequate cover for essential maintenance at all times. A strong technical knowledge and the ability to advise others will be expected, and IT literacy is essential. As a visible uniformed representative of the university a professional, positive, approachable, customer‑focused attitude is essential as interaction with students, staff, visitors, contractors and members of the public will be an important part of this role. You will assist and lead fault‑finding for complex technical issues across a varied building stock, with working technical knowledge of current guidelines and standards such as Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR) and a strong knowledge of relevant Health and Safety legislation. You will assist the university with its obligations to meet the requirements of the Estates & Facilities Integrated Management System (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001).
Main duties and responsibilities
- Supervise a team of mechanical maintenance technicians.
- Ensure work is carried out in a timely, effective manner complying with current legislation and guidelines.
- Allocate work to appropriate team members or support as required to ensure work is completed within specific deadlines.
- Complete and record a rolling programme of planned maintenance activities throughout the year, entering work task details into Planon.
- Provide technical support and advice to technicians to resolve problems and ensure timely completion.
- Work in compliance with university policies, procedures, legislation and health and safety standards.
- Assist the mechanical engineering manager to plan preventative maintenance tasks to ensure all work is completed according to the programme.
- Order parts and equipment to maintain a consumables stock level enabling planned and reactive maintenance.
- Coordinate and maintain records of annual leave and sickness absence for the team, ensuring adequate staffing levels and monitoring and advising on team performance.
- Prioritise jobs in order of urgency, making decisions on methods to be used and sequencing actions.
- Conduct on‑site diagnostics and undertake mechanical maintenance of services across HVAC, compressors, steam generation, domestic and commercial gas and associated testing and certification.
- Liaise with contractors working on university premises to ensure compliance with required timescales and health and safety standards.
- Provide advice about solutions to technical tasks using in‑depth knowledge of the university infrastructure.
- Maintain good relationships with key contacts in university departments and communicate with them about work being undertaken and provide regular progress updates.
- Respond to requests for assistance outside normal working hours in accordance with the department’s call‑out procedures, participating in the formal call‑out rota.
- Willingness to partake in ongoing professional development to ensure compliance with current legislation.

Person Specification
- Essential - HNC level or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
- Essential - A minimum of 3 GCSEs including Maths and English, or equivalent literacy and numeracy skills.
- Essential - Proven experience in mechanical maintenance.
- Essential - Experience motivating and communicating with a team of staff.
- Essential - In‑depth knowledge of mechanical installations and the products and services available for maintaining them.
- Essential - Experience using IT systems such as Google applications, MS Word and Excel, email, electronic calendars and Planon.
